I’ve been using PIA for several years and was just wondering if there is something better. My renewal is coming up in a few days.

Protonvpn or Mulvad are really the only two ones you can trust.

I have ProtonVPN, love it so far, very fast. Had Nord for a few years on a promo, no complaints.

Former ExpressVPN user.
I currently use Surfshark. It's simple to use, and I always stay connected. Plus, I don't notice any speed lag issues like I did with ExpressVPN.

None. You don't need a VPN. It doesn't make you more secure.

Mullvad. I was a PIA customer for many years until they were bought by a shady ad company a couple years ago.

What kind of speed hit is good? 10%, 25%? What is fastest VPN? As I understand it, all VPNs will have an impact on internet speed, but have no idea what is an "acceptable" hit.

This was my experience also. Plus, Surfshark is considerably cheaper.

From what I see in this thread, it seems like of the good VPN providers there isn't a bad one. But the bad ones are really bad. I have only ever used Nord and I'm happy with it. If you connect anywhere outside the US you will see a performance hit but if I connect to Dallas or Wichita I'm maxed at my subscribed DL speed of 300mbps. I like the options they offer such as double VPN, many different countries, onion routing to name a few. They offer some malicious site protection and a password manager included but I don't use them.
Those other services may offer them as well but I've never used them. Just thought I'd add my personal anecdote.
