re: Is 15 mbps fine for cutting the cord?
Posted by Rooguroo on 12/9/22 at 10:38 pm to The Godfather
I watch this guy on YouTube pretty regularly, he has great content. He did a video on T-Mobile 5G home internet and adding a directional antenna kit to the device. He was getting 400/400 I think. Its been a while since I watched the video. The guy at the T-Mobile store evem told him it wasnt available in his area but it is a 30 day risk free deal so just return it if it doesn't work.

re: Need a 55-65 inch TV for bedroom, What you recommend?

We've had two 65" TCL Roku TVs for over two years. I certainly recommend that brand.
I bought the 6 series google tv version for my inlaws. It's a terrific TV. Some posters here don't like that TCL is a subsidiary of thr Chinese government but they work well.
I bought a vizio two black Fridays ago and I started having trouble about 13 months in. The warranty is 12 months. I won't be buying another vizio TV.

I will recommend that since OP wants to mount it on the house, it should be plugged into a power source whether wifi w/110 or preferably just get a PoE camera. Running wires really isn't all that hard, it's an investment of a few hours that will save many more hours of hassle dealing with batteries.
It could be as easy as running an extension cord in the attic to power a wifi camera.
Absolutely this. Wired is just better 99.9 percent of the time.
BUT, if you want something like that I'd suggest mounting something like this on your bus stop. Capturing a plate will be more difficult with a faster moving vehicle using typical home security cameras. Make and model are pretty easy though. There are tons of brands, reolink, amcrest, lorex, night owl, arlo....
I have a reolink system so I'd get something like Reolink Argus Pro
This guy demos tons of cameras and may help you out. Youtube
Regarding BRPD. If you go to them with a traffic violation they likely won't do much. If you have video of a hit and run they may be able to make an arrest. At best you could request them to sit in the area and write traffic citations, although you will probably have better luck with the sheriff's office if they are willing to work it in the city limits.
If you have an HOA maybe they could look into LPR cameras. I think they run about 6k per camera and use a monthly cellular data connection for connectivity. There are probably cheaper DIY options but I've never gotten much into those.
A big second for MSI. Costco has an MSI Stealth 15M for 200 or 300 off. I've been very impressed with MSI; you get alot of power for the price and their laptops are low on the gamer look, as in its not all RGB. You coukd take it to a business meeting and no one would tell the difference.
I highly reccomend getting a 144hz screen. Even if it is adaptive refresh rate the smoothness of a 144hz screen, especially for games, is just so much easier on the eyes. I'll take a 1080p 144hz screen over a 4k 60hz any day.

If you haven't pulled the trigger on your VMS consider using Milestone Essential to get your feet wet and figure out what you want to do. It's free for up to 8 cameras, although reolink is not listed as a supported camera, the Reolink website says it will work with Milestone. Milestone is used by some very large organizations; I have only ever heard of Blue Iris being used for home use.

Setup Open DNS. It has a family shield to block adult content and it can log web addresses visited. It's a pretty easy setup.

I'll throw in my anecdote in here. At home I have a full reolink shop for cameras. I have 6 cameras running 2k at 30FPS. I am very pleased with reolink, nightvision is impressive and I've got no complaints. A good friend of mine has all Amcrest cameras and he is also very impressed with his.
There are a couple of things that gives one the edge over another. Amcrest has a doorbell that no longer requires a cloud subscription and it's very convenient to have it all in one app. Reolink does not have a doorbell so I have a Eufy doorbell. My main reason for that was it was the only one with local storage when I bought it. Reolink offers some cameras that are more innovative than amcrest, like the dual lens camera with 180 degree (I think?) FOV.
If you can get past Chinese made cameras they work quite well and you won't be disappointed at that price.

From what I see in this thread, it seems like of the good VPN providers there isn't a bad one. But the bad ones are really bad. I have only ever used Nord and I'm happy with it. If you connect anywhere outside the US you will see a performance hit but if I connect to Dallas or Wichita I'm maxed at my subscribed DL speed of 300mbps. I like the options they offer such as double VPN, many different countries, onion routing to name a few. They offer some malicious site protection and a password manager included but I don't use them.
Those other services may offer them as well but I've never used them. Just thought I'd add my personal anecdote.

I see a lot of T-Mobile fans here and I'm looking forward to testing it out. My company is getting some T-Mobile lines and I'll test it then. But if you want to test it for yourself they offer a 5g Hotspot with 30 gigs for 30 days. Connect your device to the wifi and test it out that way. Send the device back when you're done. If you have an unlocked iPhone 11 or newer you can download their test drive app that uses an esim. Same deal, 30 gigs for 30 days.
The crucial point with T-Mobile is that they are not investing in 4G. They are putting all of their eggs in the 5G basket. If you go with them you will need a 5G phone.
I currently have Verizon for both my personal and work phones and it is 95 percent reliable. There have been times that on campus I get 180mbps and times I have gotten 300 kbps, yes, with a K.
On Ultra Wide band millimeter wave in Houston I was getting 2800 mbps. But walk a block away and it's down to 100.
My parents live in Washington parish and Verizon is awful for them. AT&T is rocking 200mbps in Pine. I haven't tested T-Mobile there but I'm looking forward to it.
When I get a T-Mobile line I will make a post with some real world speed tests in locations around the state.

re: In market for new budget TV. Looking for advice.

I bought my inlaws a TCL 6 series - google tv for Christmas and we were very impressed by it. I bought a smaller vizio on black Friday 2020 and it is having issues. When playing anything on the TV hardware itself it flickers on white parts of the screen, the UI freezes indefinitely and I have to unplug and plug back in. I've swapped to an nvidia shield on that tv instead of the vizio ui and it only recognizes the input about half the time (a hard reset corrects it). Additionally the vizio has a one year warranty from most retailers except sams and Costco. Those two retailers offer a three year warranty.

Now, AT&T has made it much easier for those who were on the fence. You can access a long list (first spotted by XDA) that shows exactly which phones will keep working after the 3G networks are shut down. If your device isn't on the list, you probably need to upgrade.

I'm part of what seems like a general consensus on the Asus. Most of my desktop components are asus, my wife's laptop is asus and my work laptop is asus. In my opinion they make the best hardware on the market right now at a reasonable price point. I use a USB c dongle with an ethernet and 3 USB ports built in. Speed tests show a negligible reduction in up/download speed. It's near gigabit on LAN. It's the uni brand I found on amazon.
Also, if you're playing games or doing any type of video production or graphics, that 144hz screen will make all the difference in the world.
Grats on the new machine!

Watch these two videos. Use Ventoy to create a bookable usb that can boot multiple iso's without having to switch. Second run hirens boot cd and run the password manager software included. It will provide a list of local accounts and allow you to change the password.
Alternatively just use Rufus to create the boot USB if you don't want to use ventoy.

Captron makes a good point. It very well could be that new tower hardware isn't meshing with a device that old. I have had similar connectivity issues in the past and had a bad sim card. A crazy thing to stop working but a new one fixed my issue.
It's a Longshot but if you've recently installed any updates it may be worth rolling them back.

I spoke with a regional T-mobile enterprise account salesman about a month back. T-mobile has come a long way but overall service in Louisiana is not as good as Verizon and att, yet. By end of the year they will have 8 more mid band 5g towers around south Baton Rouge alone. These towers are not all up yet. They are rolling out COWS (cell on wheels) for GameDay. They are not hooked up to the DAS in tiger stadium so you may experience poorer performance inside the stadium than att and Verizon. They are working to get on board with this. One positive is that because they experience less network congestion with less subscribers, you are likely to receive better service than the other two. Having tested all three, I'd say that on a normal day (not gameday) they are on par with with att and Verizon.
Someone else mentioned using test drive. If you don't have a newer unlocked iPhone to do test drive with esim you can request a wifi Hotspot for free. Same deal with 30 gigs or 30 days, whichever is first

It's a little expensive, $230. But it's solar powered, ptz, and does 4g over t-mobile. It may fit your needs.
