I currently use my chromecast or my PS4 for the majority of my streaming. Should I invest in a strictly streaming device?

I keep seeing the Roku Ultra and Amazon Firecube being fairly well reviewed.

If so which one does the board recommend?

Can't speak for either of those but the fire stick I had went to shite, real slow and wouldn't launch apps, and I picked up a cheap Roku at Walmart and it has been solid so far.

Both will serve their purpose, especially if you are keeping it to the main stream services. I like the Cube, and the voice features CAN be useful.

If you want a tank of a device, the Roku's are usually just better from a reliability standpoint.

Honestly, it doesn't matter. If you have a lot of Amazon buy in (I buy all my digital stuff through Amazon), it's probably better. And there's also sideloading. Plus, Amazon will probably turn the Cube into a multi-functional device with updates.

if it makes a difference at all:

FireTV does not have VUDU as an app option. This is something my family uses and shares for all kinds of movie purchases that are made. I think Amazon must have a deal with someone else and thus they keep it off. It's a bit of a pain sometimes when I want to watch a movie and end up having to move my roku to my living room.

Roku doesn't have twitch anymore, however they have a $1 app called "twitched" that is actually better than the normal twitch app imo.

Other than those couple of things, you won't have any real issues and both should do what you need them to do.

Yeah, this is a deal breaker. I have Movies Anywhere, so my Vudu Catalog is available for me on Amazon and Google Play Movies, but I like Vudu's interface and playback quality the best of those three.

serious question..couldn't you just sideload the APK like people do with kodi?

i havent tried it, but i imagine you can go to the apk archive and get an older verison of youtube or other 'non supported' android apps and just install them directly no?

It looks like there is a way to do it, I just haven't ever looked in to it, to be perfectly honest. I'd rather Amazon just stop being douches

There is an app called Apps to Fire for your phone. I have downloaded Apps to my phone then put them on FireTV via Apps to Fire. That is the only work around that I have seen.

Have used a Roku for the last several years but recently bought an Android Mi Box and really like it so far.

I would stay away from the Fire Stick for a primary streaming device. They are nice for an outside TV but are just way to laggy and slow to be using everyday.

I am partial to the FireTV 2nd Gen. We own a lot of digital movies for the kids in the Amazon video cloud and it has an app for damn near every service...except Youtube TV.

Full disclosure...I have never used anything outside of the above mentioned.

Nvidia Shield TV is the best device by far, it's best when used as the main cord cutter streaming device moreso than a add on device for Netflix and prime movies.

If you want The Best experience you will want to go this route

I use Roku for everyday use and no complaints. Works well for 4K in bedroom. I bought a cheap fire stick for travel so I can watch Netflix in hotels and no complaints for intermittent use. I use my smart TV for main viewing area and no complaints
