Who is moderately tech savvy but only needs a computer to
1. Manage and store minimal files
2. Manage and store pictures
3. Use Zoom meetings
4. Maneuver the internet via satellite, cable, Wi-Fi or DSL. Occasional podcast.
5. Basic email like Proton mail or Gmail
6. Interact with large data accounts like bank accounts, credit card accounts and investment accounts.
7 Print to wireless printer
8. Do all of the above with basic windows operating systems, apps and software at good speed.
On a tablet that is low maintenance and below $1000
What would you recommend? TYIA.

You described a sub-$100 machine, but since you said Zoom, get at least a 12th generation i5 if you want to handle background filtering effectively in real time. (Decent iGPU)
Thunderbolt or at least DP+PD over USB would make for better docking.
If must be tablet, the surface pro w/snapdragon X chip can be had for $700-800.

15" Lenovo IdeaPad 1.
It should have
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7520U or Intel N200
RAM: 8GB
Storage: 256GB SSD
OS: Windows 11 Home
Price: ~$300–$350

I’m a fan of the surface pro pcs myself. Can always get a bigger monitor for $150-$200.

Yup. The Snapdragon models have up to 32GB unified RAM at almost 140GB/s of memory bandwidth and 45 TOPS of NPU. Basically Mac level power in a windows machine. Only bummer is MS charges double/triple to get that 32GB while some others make it a more approachable.

He can also get a used 4th Gen Surface for $290 on eBay. It's last gen, but it's slick and snappy (I got the Ryzen version with 16GB), and it looks like the screen is brighter than the Lenovo. That might be a consideration for older eyes. My used one came wiped with Win11 Pro and no fingerprints at all. It might be preferable to having to uninstall all the crapware that would come with a new one.
ETA: The review I glanced at was for the 22 model of the IdeaPad 1.

So I’m using a sell laptop now. Inspiron 17 5000 series . I like a laptop but it is too big for good portability.cut has an 17.3” Full HD display. And it’s way more than I need and it needs a new motherboard.
Why does everyone recommend away from a tablet.

Unless you have specific apps that you want to download, I would recommend a Chromebox or Chromebook instead of a Windows operating system. That way your parent or grandparent can still do everything you listed without having to worry about updating software and antivirus. After continually calling me for computer support for a few months about 20 years ago, I jumped in the car and drove 15 hours straight to install a Chromebook for my mother in law and set it up for her. I also paid for the Chromebook, and have replaced it (now a Chromebox) for free to her every 5 years or so. It has saved me countless hours of phone support as it is so much easier for her to use.

Good point. I would never let a parent near a windows machine but that’s what was requested.

A Chromebook can do Zoom meetings?

Probably the lack of a keyboard. While you can get a Bluetooth keyboard for a tablet, they'll probably have to reconnect it when they take the ipad in the backyard for a Facetime session, etc. If they have agility issues in their hands, it may be difficult to hold a tablet, unlike a laptop-like device.
Yes, Zoom is available on Chromebook devices.

If, Zoom, is important to you, then I would generally advise against a Chromebook. Unless of course you get a top end one. Which at that point, you might as well get a MS Surface Pro or Macbook (M1 or better chip.)

ok. Why? Choppy video?

Yeah. Most Chromebooks are not up to spec. Zoom recommends a quad-core (or better) @2.5 GHz and 16 GB of RAM.

Well I'm seeing this:
quote:
RAM requirements
Windows and macOS devices
8GB or greater total system RAM recommended
ChromeOS devices
4GB or greater total system RAM recommended
Note: Zoom Web App consumes 1GB-1.5GB of active memory during a Zoom meeting.
quote:
Processor requirements
Desktop devices
Single-core 1Ghz or higher
(Recommended) Dual-core 2Ghz or higher (Intel i3/i5/i7 or AMD equivalent)
Mobile devices
Any 1 Ghz single core processor or better (non-Intel)
Zoom.
