Best app for listening to audiobooks? Audible? Kindle Unlimited? Something else?

Audible seems a bit pricey. Is there a better option out there?

Best, I don't know...
Cheapest...overdrive. It lets you checkout audiobooks from the library. Downside is that you actually checkout what's at your library and you have to turn it back in. Twice I actually didn't even finish the book before I had to turn it back in, and then I couldn't check it back out for two weeks because someone else had reserved it.
Kindle is not for audiobooks, that's for reading them.
Audible is 15 a month to get one book a month. Quality is good. I enjoy

I use A combination of Audible, Overdrive, and OneclickDigital. Overdrive and OneclickDigital are through the East Baton Rouge library. I am on the one credit per month plan with Audible. The credits roll over so it's not like you lose it if you don't get a new audible book within the month. Also, they regularly have books on sale for 3.99. I've found a few I really like that way. Start with the library options if you don't want to spend money. The apps aren't quite as nice as audible but they are fine.

Overdrive is great. If you have a friend in a big city like Houston, Dallas or Atlanta get their library card number and see what they have for digital audiobooks as well.
Also you can get some great free podcasts like Dan Carlins Hardcore History.

i'm not certain they haven't closed this loophole, but i used to be able to put audiobooks on an old device and just put it in ariplane mode / turn off wifi, so overdrive wouldn't know it's expired. i guess that's "stealing," but i only did it to finish up something when i ran out of time. don't turn me in please! (works with ebooks on Kindle too)

I like that audible saves my library, and you can pick a friend or two who have a good audible library, login into each others account, and download their books. The books are still on your device and still work even after logging back into your account.
I have two friends who have the 1 book a month plan like me that I do this with, it gives us all access to 36 new books a year plus the library of each from previous years.

Audible is by far the best, but is expensive.
That said, at least from retail pricing it's still a reasonable deal, I regularly buy the member sale books for 5 bucks or less, and they pretty frequently offer 3 credits for 30 bucks or something like that.

Not too bad if you find friends to share account info with, or if you get the gold plan. Mine is about to renew, I get 12 credits in January for $150, but just saw that with renewal I also get a free audio subscription to the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, and always get 30% discount on other books purchased without credits.
looking at the coupon codes on the honey plugin for chrome, you can get your first two months for $.95 with a gold membership.

I only download torrents, and then I use "listen audiobook player." I tried a few others and found that I preferred the options and UI of this app.

Another paid subscription model is scribd.com... not sure of the quality of the app for audio books or how big their library is, but I think it is only $8.95/month as opposed to $14.95 for Audible. (You might want to verify my numbers.) Plus I think you also get access then to a ton of written content they have.
If you like old books, Librivox is free. Most of the free offerings are "the classics" which are old enough to be in the public domain. Some of the volunteer readers are good, others a little annoying, but it's free. You can also purchase newer, more popular books through the app, but depending on how quickly you go through books, that may or may not be more cost effective than a flat monthly subscription.
Also, you can scrounge around and find free audio books here and there. One decent source of free books (again, mostly older books in the public domain) is at OpenCulture.com. Here's the link:

If you already have books, but just need the app, then Smart Audiobook Player is well regarded (for Android at least, not sure about Apple offerings):

I think functionality might become a little limited after 30 day trial if you don't splurge $2 for it after that. Here's a brief article on how to set it up:

Also, some other audio apps that are not audiobook specific, like music players & podcast players, sometimes handle audiobooks quite well. Pretty sure Podcast Addict handles books fine and does a better job of searching various sources on the web for content than some of the other podcast players I've tried; Pocket Casts and BeyondPod may be good for the purpose though I'm not sure. An app called "Music Folder Player Free" (free trial, then $2) also works okay for audio books that you already have on your phone (but not for searching the web for them). Link:

Note: Librivox works straight-forward, but some of the free / inexpensive things I mention require a little more effort on your part to find content and adjust settings, etc... but such is the nature of free.

If you are an Amazon prime member they are offering a three month free trial.

Is there a safe site to download these from? I just discovered torrents a few months ago and have downloaded a dozen or so audio books from kickass. I feel like the site is shady as shite though and my phone is probably more infected than Charlie Sheen.

This guy I know downloads the torrents directly to his phone from audio book bay. No problems. So he says.
