Wife has iPhone 14 and is interested in an Apple watch. She mainly wants it to wear at work so she doesn't have to carry her phone around but can still get texts from the kids.

Suggestions, lessons learned, or words of wisdom appreciated. TIA

Bought my wife a series 6 about 4 years ago. It's basically the same watch as the current SE. (I'm incorrect. The SE was updated in 2022, so it shares more in common with the series 8 or 9.) Seems like the way to go.

Rundown of different apple watches.

Cellular if she's not going to have her phone nearby,

The absolute only reason for anyone to get a cellular version of the Apple Watch is if they want to do a run or bike without a cell on em.

Almost 99.9% of everyone else is better off saving cash with non cell version.

Well he said she doesn't want to carry her phone around at work. Guess may need more specifics on what exactly that means to decide if it'll be near enough to still work without cellular

If the main reason she wants to get it is because she doesn't want to carry around her phone I would 100% just get one with cellular.

That depends on how close the phone is to her. My wife doesn't carry her phone but is a teacher so is in the same room as her phone 90% of the day. Her watch without cellular is perfect for the same reasons the OPs wife wants one.

Depends on how big her work is, I can get a pretty good distance from my phone before it loses connection. If she is walking over 100ft from her phone often, cellular is warranted.

If she plans to leave her phone a long way away from her device a cellular watch makes sense. If you have a cellular watch and end up not needing the service you don’t have to get a line with the carrier.

This is a great time to be shopping as there is an announcement in two weeks and may see some clearance deals from authorized retailers.

Apple also has a pretty generous return policy if she decides it’s not for her or she wants a different size/configuration after using it.

This is great info, thanks everyone. She's a nurse in a clinic, so I suspect her phone will be close enough at most times to not need cellular. But, I'll get a better sense of that before I make a decision.

Thanks again!

The new house is open for business if you need somewhere to watch the game. Of course EVERYONE is invited...

Don’t necessarily need cellular. If you can keep your phone within distance for the blue tooth to stay connected it will be fine

I may be wrong because it has been several years since I owned an Apple Watch, but can't you connect the watch to wifi? That way even if the phone is out of bluetooth range it will still work?
