Did you try with gasoline? It’s probably still too small, just curious.

Yea but I was throwing the blower and the central air unit at the same time, like a dummy. I was tripping the circuit built in to the Firmin.

I think I can run my (3ton?) AC if I get one of those soft starters but I'm out of my element there. I've been reading that AC units in the 3tonnage range require close to damn 14k surge wattage and my little Firmin ain't pushin' that.

I've heard you can get compressor/AC soft starts on your AC unit to lower the initial wattage/surge but still not sure if my Firmin can power that puppy.

EasyStart

They are pretty damn easy to install.

I have a Generac. A good service plan with a reputable company is a huge requirement to keep these running well and prioritizes you if something happens when you actually need it.

Looking into kohler and generac, anyone with experience with these brands of generator. How has it held up? Basically my only two options if I want it sooner than later.

I've been told to look into Cummings. They are holding up better than the others.

Imo I wouldn’t worry about the pool, unless it’s on the main house breaker?

We have an older generac that’s a champ. I know they had a bad run 2019-2020 fabrications that have had a lot of issues. My neighbor bought a new generac right after Ida and has had zero issues with it.

Kohler is awesome. And you will pay for it.

Looking at those right now waiting on some feedback.

Was quoted $15,400 total for a Kohler 20kwRcal-200sels. I dunno if that is a good price or a bad price in this market. That's with me building a concrete pad for it to sit on

That sounds a bit high. In the last year I had installed a 30KW cumins for right under 17k. I supplied the pad and since it was a new construction the utilities were right where they needed to be.

I had a 20KW Cummings installed in April 2021 for $9,600.00 that included automatic transfer switch, concrete pad, and sales tax. Longest outage so far was only 13 hours, not really much of a test.

I just shut it down every evening for a few minutes to check the oil then fired it back up.

you can make it work, but tons of people had problems. I ran ours after laura for 6 weeks. Made it work but liquid cooled is 100% the way to go down here.

We have a generac with an ATS. Its not instantaneous but it only takes a few seconds to click in. the power switching back from generator to line power is unnoticeable unless you listen to the generator. Its saved us a few times when we lost power. That said they are loud so I always worry about the neighbors thoughts on it at 3am...but I mean, a good explanation should make sense if it ever came to that

Am I the only one that always worries about it stopping mid run? Something about the way it tests itself on an unnaturally low RPM always worries me. Also if AC kicks in when the genny is running, the high load makes you think its gonna stop. They dont seem to though.

Just a different idea but have you ever considered getting a portable generator and having an electrician hook your house up? A good generator to power a 2000sq ft house can cost maybe $1,000 and maybe another 600-1000$ to hook it up to your house.

Just a different idea unless you have a big house and need a big arse generator. I don't and prefer a portable generator for camping, etc.

Please be careful if you do this. some states dont let you because unless you shut the main off youre sending voltage down the line back to where workers are working on it

Correct. Can't speak for everyone but we have a interlock kit that requires you to shutoff the main breaker before the generator breaker can be switched on.
It's overkill though as we also have directions and my wife and I simply follow those.

I have a bad feeling we're going to be needing to use our portable generator very shortly. I still have PTSD from Ida.

Update on this, wound up going a different route got a Cummins 20kw installed last Saturday. 6400 with tax for the generator and 5k to install so 11,400 not a terrible price in this market. Generator is pretty nice and compact happy with my choice. Time will tell on durability. Thanks for all who chimed in

Cummins is what I am leaning towards. Be sure to update the thread. Hopefully you won't need it much this year tho...
