I care too much about display quality. My XS has beautiful OLED panel. XR has cool colors though.

Do you think it’s that much of a noticeable difference for $250?

I have an 8 plus right now and I’m fine with my screen...

Personally yeah I’m a phone nerd. You’re going to use your phone more than any other object in your life that next couple years. $250 is worth it to me. I can’t decide that for everyone.

Also on the 8 plus the ppi is higher than the XR so it’s a bit of a down grade.

It all depends on your perspective. It looks like the ppi is 326 which is the same as the iPhone 6 which I'd be coming from, so I don't think the screen quality will be as big of a driver for me. I'll wait until they come out before deciding but I'll probably be looking at the XS Max vs the XR so it will be another $100 difference when considering things.

The 6 had a 4.7" screen and the 10R has a 6.1" screen. The lack of pixels will definitely show on a screen that size.

I’m not following you here.

Both phones are 326 pixels per inch, which means that the 10R will have more pixels, not fewer.

If larger screens with the same ppi looked worse, the 4.7 in version would look worse than, say, the 4 inch screen on a 5s.

I’m not getting one (I have an XS Max), but I have a hunch that the XR is going to be a far better smartphone than most people are giving it credit for.

Yeah that’s what I’m expecting. I just can’t justify $1000-1500 for a cell phone unfortunately.

It's has a few more pixels due to the screen being taller but we're also talking about an almost 1.5" of screen difference with the same PPI.

iPhone 6: 750 x 1334
iPhone 10R: 828 x 1792

for reference

iPhone 6 Plus: 1080 x 1920

Why do with a lower resolution screen than a previous phone? That's ridiculous.

On screens that small, you can't tell a difference. On a 6.1" screen, you can definitely tell the difference.

I think the XR was made specifically for this purpose. People who want a new iPhone and aren’t ok with paying four figures for one.

Everyone is balking at the screen quality (and I get that, because I’m sort of a screen snob), but the fact is that most people who have iPhones are looking at 326 ppi and they’re perfectly fine with it.

I’m predicting that it does kind of a like AirPods did, it will launch, people will kind of not take it seriously, but more and more people will buy it and realize how good it is.

Because the majority of iPhone users don’t care about having a true HD phone. Apple is making a phone that appeals to what the majority of iPhone users actually want.

What change occurs between 4.7 and 6.1 inches that doesn't occur when moving from 4 to 4.7?

People definitely noticed the difference between the 3.5 inch 4S and the 4 inch iPhone 5.

So you’re ok with Apple purposefully handcuffing phones? I’m sure majority of iPhone uses want the most bang for their buck and the 10R is not worth it.

Quite a lot actually. You can start to see the pixels. Most Android phone makers release mid or low range phones with large screens and you can clearly see the difference between a 5.5” 1080p screen and a 5.5” 720p screen. With the 10R, you’re going a half inch larger than that.

The main thing that changed was that the screen got 0.5” taller. I’m sure their display technology changed which might be what you’re referring to.

iPhone 4S: 640 x 960
iPhone 5: 640 x 1136

That’s not what most iPhone users want. If the average iPhone user wanted the most features/best specs possible for their money, Samsung or One Plus would have crushed Apple by now.

Again, just because a company doesn’t include a feature that you, or I value doesn’t mean they’re handcuffing the phone. We aren’t the average iPhone user. The average user wants a reliable iPhone that doesn’t look dated and doesn’t drain their wallet. Specs are an afterthought.

Could Apple have put an HD panel on the XR? Sure. But again, that feature is not going to sell the phone to the group of people who are actually going to buy it. But you know what will? Exceptional battery life, which is what you’re going to get with a 326 ppi LCD panel on a phone that size.

iPhone users didn't want bigger phones and now Apple produces one of the biggest phones on the market. Apple doesn't give them a choice. You're forced to use whatever they decide to put out.

The average iPhone user isn't going to switch to Android under any circumstance. There's still memes going around about Android photo quality and green and blue bubbles. 9/10 iPhone users (prolly Android too) have no idea what One Plus is. They think it's just Apple vs Samsung. Samsung had phones exploding and no other Android manufacturer even bothered to take advantage of that.

Do you have any idea what the PI in PPI stands for?

Lol at the geniuses on the tech board who cannot comprehend that a set 326 Pixels Per Inch means that, no matter how many inches tall/wide the screen is, there will still be the same amount of pixels in every inch.

Edit: as a reminder, that 326 PPI was termed a Retina display because the individual pixels were not discernible at the average viewing distance.

I have the XS. Wife has the 10. I'll be ordering the 10XR for my daughters as gifts this year.

They'll be happy with a new phone and better battery life. They won't be concerned with the screen display.

So, it’ll be a step down from the 8+ correct?

XR: 1792-by-828-pixel resolution at 326 ppi
8+: 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution at 401 ppi

bump

Reviews are coming out on youtube today. Consensus seems to be that it is definitely worth saving the $250 unless you have specific use of the telephoto lens or are a screen snob. The LCD screen is still great which was my biggest fear.

Personally, it's going to come down to how I feel holding the Xr and the Xs as to wether I buy one over the other.
