Any reason why a newly purchased Ethernet cable isn’t connecting from the modem to router?

I bought a 50 ft. Ethernet cable yesterday to be able to have my router in the living room to centralize it and also so I can hardwire cables from the router to my Xbox and fire tv.

The modem is currently in a nearby bedroom so I strung the new Ethernet cable from the modem to the router in the living room and it isn’t registering. My old 3 ft Ethernet cable works fine but the whole point is to have the router in a seperate room.

Any suggestions? Something I need to do to configure it? Not too tech savvy.

Here is a LINK to the cable from amazon.

Always possible it is a bad cable. One of the pairs could be broken somewhere along the length or terminated correctly/completely. Not sure what type of QC the cables go through before being sold.

Not sure if it matters much these days, but is one cable a patch cable vs the other being a crossover cable? If so, (at least back in the day) the way the pairs are terminated would play a part. I think most routers and switches these days are self sensing.

Get a new cable and try it.

Yeah will have to bring it back I guess. It was brand new out of the box. Now some of the cable was still coiled around because I didn’t need the full length but that shouldn’t matter right? Like the entire 50 ft doesn’t have to be straightened out?

If it's interference you're worried about, nah. If, instead, you're worried about the coiled cable impeding the flow of electricity...

Dumb question I know

Yeah gonna bring it back and see if a new cable does the trick.

FYI you can buy a cheap cable tester for about the cost of that 50foot cable. I know it doesn't really help you if you just need this one cable, but if you plan to run any more in the future a tester would save you some headache.

a tester is a must when making your own cables.

Your link takes me to a general page on amazon with weird, non-cable stuff on it.

Consider something like this for future use.

Do you have maybe an office where you can plug the cable in for a PC or some other know working connection. Would be an easy way to make sure it is the wire.

Dav, did you cycle your modem when you moved the router? Also, is the modem in the same location when everything worked?

I have a blackhawk router. When I moved it, it reset to an internet off status even though it was turned on.

Just a few things to check before running to the store.

The modem and router are a few inches away from one another when it worked. All I did was unplug the router, move it to the living room, and re plug everything in with the new 50 ft. cable and no dice.

Cycle the modem? Kinda confused. All I did was turn the modem off then on again once I moved the router.

Go unplug and then replug the cable on both ends. I'm not patronizing you. When you work on a help desk this is the issue 90% of the time. Something is probably not secure.

If that doesn't work. Switch the port that you have the cable plugged into to.

If those don’t work, move the router back to where it was and plug in using the 3ft cable again to see if it is still working. May be something besides your cable got reset in the move. If it works with the 3ft cable then leave it where it is and try the 50 ft cable.
