1st Gen Pixel here. I did Pie beta, and am now on official Pie. It's fine. I don't care for the recent apps being horizontal instead of vertical.. but it's NBD.

I've noticed my Pixel is much less snappy than it used to be, and can't multitask as well. It is a couple of years old now, guess it's time to upgrade soon. The rumors of Pixel3 having only 4GB of ram is concerning to me. Looking hard at OP6 or waiting for OP6T.

I'm rooted. It's super easy to sideload the updates and re-root. I do it every time.

Flashed Magisk via TWRP. Here's what I did:

Download full image from google & extract
edit Flash-all.bat to remove "-w" (wipe device flag)
adb reboot bootloader
flash-all.bat
boot into android and allow system setup to finish
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot twrp.img
install Magisk.zip
boot into android and enjoy

Great another update to force people with older phones to upgrade.

My phone updated yesterday. A lot of apps are different and I have picture in picture. Historically at two years the updates kill phones.

i have no idea what this means. i got out of the world of custom ROMs years ago so treat me like i'm 2 years old and explain to me how this helps me with my pixel or what this allows me to do. i'm still messing around with flashing & rooting so if i need to do this i need to understand what the benefit is.

Are you familiar with Xposed? I think Magisk is similar to that. There are modules that you can load through Magisk to enable certain modifications to the system. It's not a custom ROM.

The only thing I've used it for is to root my factory image.

Here's a list of some of the modules:

Active Edge Mod for Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL: Customize the Google Pixel 2’s Active Edge to do any action with Edge Sense Plus
Repo | XDA: Pixel 2 / Pixel 2 XL

Adaptive Icons Round Mask: Changes the icon mask to round, and changes useRoundIcon to true.
Repo | attached here

ADB & Fastboot for Android NDK: Static ARM adb and fastboot binaries for Android built with the NDK
Repo | XDA

Adreno GPU Developer Preview Drivers: Replace ROM Adreno GPU drivers from Qualcomm
Repo | XDA

Ainur Sauron MK II: Automatically detects your device specs, and performs all of the possible audio tuning within it's installer. You can sit back and enjoy incredible sound.
Repo | XDA

Ainur JamesDSPManager: Equalizer add-on for the Ainur Audio sound mod
Repo

AirAudio Magisk Module: This module enables AirAudio's "system-mode" and allows you to stream all your audio to any network-enabled receiver.
Repo

Always-on Fingerprint: Allows you to unlock your device without pressing the home button. The fingerprint scanner will remain always-on to allow that. Apparently it's only useful on Xiaomi devices.
XDA

AM3D Zirene Sound: This module enables AM3D Zirene Sound.
Repo | XDA

Android Mic Fix: Fixes in call low volume mic issues for various Android devices.
Repo | XDA

Android O APT-X libraries: Android Oreo officially supports APT-X bluetooth audio, however not all phones have the needed library files. This module simply places the missing APT-X(HD) and LDAC files in your system if you don't already have it. Enjoy better bluetooth audio!
Repo

Android O NotoColorEmoji Replacer: Get Android O's emojis on any Android device running Android 5.0+!
XDA

Android P Fonts & Emojis: Self-explanatory
XDA

Android RAM management fixes: Tweak the memory management of the device, enable more background apps.. et cetera..
Repo

App Ops System Plugin: Much faster implementation than root mode. Download from the app's settings.
Play Store | GitHub

AptoidePriv: Make Aptoide a privileged app systemlessly. You can also use Terminal App Systemizer to accomplish the same thing as well as systemize other apps.
