This is a two part question. First question is do I have to have the amazon echo for the echo dot to work. My next question is do I need the amazon echo if all I want is the benefits of of Alexa without the music function

The echo dot is just a inexpensive version of the echo. It does all the same things, just smaller with a lesser speaker.

It's a great product for the price point.

Get the Dot and save the money.

This is coming from someone that has both.

As others have said the main difference between the 2 is speaker quality. Getting the most out of the Echo or Dot is more about having the right other pieces in place to do what you want. Echo Dot + Fire TV + PlayStation Vue is great and allows a level of control I couldn't get if I had say a Roku instead of a Fire TV.

Basic controls like Pause/FF/RW are nice, but being able to say "Alexa change channel to ESPN" actually saves time and turns a series of button pushes and multiple screen loads into a one voice command shortcut. It still has a long way to go, but it's already becoming pretty useful in the right situations.

Yes indeed. I run my Bose SoundLink Mini II using it most of the time. Works perfectly. You an also connect and disconnect it using voice which is super easy.

To answer the OP, you can use either by themselves. The only requirement for Echo-Dot, Tap or the full-sized device-is that you are an Amazon Prime user.

I only use echo dots. If I'm going to listen to music it'll be from at least a 2.0 system, not the echo speaker even the full sized one. I have it connected to my receiver via bluetooth so the only time the echo dot speaker is working is when it's responding to a command. Any music goes through the receiver. As a side I have it sitting next to a Harmony Hub and those two together are incredible. Complete voice control over my entire A/V system except for navigating menus which I now do with my phone. Being able to tell alexa "Yes I'm still watching" instead of fumbling for the remote, raising/lowering the volume and pausing/playing is a godsend.

I have an echo plus and echo dot, only reason I have the plus is because it has a built in smart hub for all my smart items to hook up to (digital life system, light bulbs, smart plugs, etc)

But we also play music through it as well

Thanks to everyone that helped answer my questions. It’s great to be able to come here and get some good insight for people like me trying to understand how these personal assistants mesh with what we do everyday

Does that hub work for any brand? Or just certain ones?

Hey, can I move into your house?

I'm gone for work a couple of weeks a month and sleep 7 hours a day. I'll only monitor what you do a fraction of the time that Alexa will.

...and in exchange for free rent, I'll even play whatever tunes you want played and search the web for you when you say "Hey Alex."
