To be honest I couldn’t tell if it was the players or manager. Most likely both. Belgium was much more prepared it seemed. But to be honest the players looked slow and sloppy, so I do t think I can even judge. There were so many stupid passes or plays that I don’t know where the fault lies. No doubt the players were bad. But did poch hurt them, idk
The guys looked either tired or thought a little too highly of themselves. Or just scared and froze

It was a match of men (Belgium) vs kids (USA). Men won easliy.

I'm not saying Poch is god's gift but this nonsense that he sucks and is a failure is BS.
Never said that. Only posted facts and I agree with you… I liked the Poch hiring, best pedigreed coach we’ve ever had… but he’s not above reproach and he was hired to get them past a team like Belgium, in a home World Cup, with every possible advantage.

Gregg is a bitch. /thread

We paid that bitch a lot less to get us to the round of 16 though.

LOL, no. We just aren’t that good at soccer.

Absolutely no one was saying this before Belgium

Here's the thing about Gregg.
We don't beat Paraguay 4-1 with him (Probably 1-0 with a late goal or maybe a 0-0 draw)
We also don't lose 4-1 to Belgium with him (Probably a 1-0 loss or maybe a 0-0 draw).

What tactically, outside of taking some random gamble to start the game, should have been different that he didn't change at half time?

Rudi Garcia chose the players to execute the exact tactics he prefers. High work rate defending to press and win the ball in vulnerable areas, playmaker type instead of classic striker, speed to play in the air to racing wingers etc.
That Poch only seemed to get the team adjusted to that after being shellshocked for 45 minutes when it seemed kind of obvious as soon as the lineup was announced is certainly on him.
The criticism is that if the players weren't shellshocked from seeming so unprepared the entire the 1st half, it would have been a different game altogether. Maybe one we still lose but who knows.
But coming out so ill adjusted to what seemed a fairly obvious game plan from Belgium certainly falls mainly on Poch.

The counter argument to that is that they were shellshocked because our tactics played right into Belgium's hand.
Regardless, if every single player is shellshocked, that's on the coach.

That's what I was trying to say too.
Belgium came out playing exactly like anyone who's watched Rudi Garcia teams over the years expected and it seemed like we had no answer.
Great when a manager makes some tweaks during the match. Not so much when the whole team seemingly suffers PTSD from getting bombarded and he has to change everything on the fly.

Welcome back to the board btw. Been a while. I always thought your posts were well written and well reasoned.

What’s your logic here?
We scored two goals in the group stage at the last world cup.
Drew England 0-0, Drew Wales 1-1, Beat Iran 1-0. There's just some living on the edge going on when you lack any bite in the attack. I think the Paraguay match looks wildly different with Gregg considering how they looked the rest of the tournament.

Thanks. I read it on occasion but life's been too hectic to follow much aside from Roma matches on replay for a while.

Those adjustments should have been made after we got shellacked for the first thirty minutes.
The game was literally tied at 31 minutes. Yes we looked like shite, but you wanted him to panic and blow up the entire game plan based on a tied game vs letting the team try and work into things?

Yes, great coaches are proactive, not reactive.
It was obvious 10 minutes in that we were out of our depth.

No one was saying what? I asked a question. Try using the quote function if you want to respond to something specific in my OP.
I did say after we looked pretty lackluster in the friendly vs Germany on June 6th that I did not like the vibe.
Alexi Lalas has been consistent from the git-go that Poch was paid to make it to the quarterfinal round. He failed.

"1-1" Gregg? Heck no. He may have tried to bunker and keep the score closer, but the result would have been the same.

Got it.
So your expectation was for him to sub players, with all our depth, 10 minutes into the game? I don't know what soccer you watch but I'd say that is not a common practice among "great" or even bad coaches.
If you're talking about a formation change, fine, but that's pretty hard to pinpoint and say he did nothing formation wise or tactically for the entire first half.
The guys just weren't executing shite.
And again, this wasn't like 2014. It's not like our goal was getting peppered for an entire half or the game, we just couldn't put shite together and they capitalized on our catastrophic errors.
You can chalk it up to playing into their game plan but they still only had 5 shots on goal and I think 3-4 of those were in the first 10 minutes. With 2 of those shots being goals that were very preventable with basic individual defensive execution of guys doing their job.
