Because I'm a sicko, here's what a chalk map to the final (lol) would be for us.

If we win our group
R32: Third place team
R16: Belgium
QF: Spain
SF: France
F: England

if we finish second in our group
R32: Iran
R16: Argentina
QF: Portugal
SF: England
F: France

So basically semi final is highly highly unlikely lol

Sadly, I think we'd have a better shot to get through Argentina/Portugal than Belgium/Spain.

I'm actually not scared of Belgium or Portugal, not saying I'm positive we'd win but they don't strike fear in me. Argentina scares me a little bit more but I can also see them having the usual World Cup defense hangover.

Spain would beat us 8-0 though.

Hell, Norway may beat us 4 or 5-0 if we had drawn them.

The good news for us in terms of our group is that us and Australia are the only ones that have any recent World Cup experience.

Paraguay hasn't been since 2010
Turkey since 2002 when it finished third
Slovakia since 2010
Romania since 1998
Kosovo never been

Scotland haven't been to the World Cup since 1998, in which their group also consisted of Brazil and Morocco (Norway being the other then, Haiti now).

2nd should be our goal. Group win and we won't make it out of the round of 16.

You think we have a better chance of beating Argentina than Belgium?

This is a bad take.
You have no idea who will beat who, and winning every match matters.

I took a quick minute to tally up the groups hardest to easiest based on average FIFA rankings used for draw. For Groups with a playoff team, I assume the highest ranked team makes it through.

Oddly enough, the US is in the second 'toughest' group, but that's because we are ranked 14 ourselves.

Group F: 23.25 (Netherlands, Japan, Ukraine, Tunisia)
Group D: 26.00 (USA, Paraguay, Australia, Turkey)
Group B: 26.75 (Canada, Italy, Qatar, Switzerland)
Group I: 27.25 (France, Senegal, Iraq, Norway)
Group L: 29.00 (England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama)
Group A: 29.75 (Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, Denmark)
Group K: 31.25 (Portugal, DR Congo, Uzbekistan, Colombia)
Group J: 31.75 (Argentina, Algeria, Austria, Jordan)
Group C: 34.00 (Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Scotland)
Group H: 36.25 (Spain, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay)
Group G: 37.00 (Belgium, Egypt, Iran, New Zealand)
Group E: 39.00 (Germany, Curacao, Ivory Coast, Ecuador)

I keep hearing people say we got an easy group, and I have to wonder if people are still thinking in the context of the 32-team format.

By historical standards, this is a very easy group, but by the standards of the other groups this year, it’s not great.

I also don’t like that our whole path is on the west coast.

You want to stay in one time zone the whole time ideally. They're doing their pre-World Cup camp in Irvine

If we get Turkey then it definitely get tougher. We wouldn’t be the favorite if they are in it.

Ideally, it's best if US finishes 2nd in the group stage. Better chance at advancing in the KO stage. But any of the other groups could have a hiccup and put someone on a different side come the final group games.

Cool thing about this Scotland group is it’s east coast so my uncle is probably gonna fly over for the group stage. Might try and go if that first match is in New York. My sister and niece are also there and my mom would want to go see her brother. Now i have to start trying to source tickets or something.

Fair enough, but I’m worried about road crowds in California (not so much Seattle).

I also just find it a bummer as a fan. All west coast would have been one thing, but repeating stadiums as the host in a country our size seems lame.

If I’m interpreting this correctly, curaçao vs Ivory Coast in Houston has me and my baws name on it.

The betting favorite, probably not. But one thing to remember, playing at home in a World Cup won't be the usual US is outnumbered in the stands. This is different, very different. Even in '94 it was pretty crazy support. Draw the Swiss, beat Colombia (who beat the frick out of Argentina in WCQ in the Monumental). Yes we lost to Romania, but they were really good. Meola's poor positioning aside we probably draw 0-0.

Point being, if the US are hungry, I fancy them to win the group.
