So we were still a laughing stock until when?????

Whipped Mexico's arse in 2002?

Went toe to toe with Italy in 2006?

Benny Feilhaber'd Mexico's arse in the 2007 Gold Cup?

At the absolute latest it was when we whipped Spain's arse in the Confederations Cup in 2009.

For me, it started with whipping Portugal in 2002.

Either way, there's not much "elevation" that you can point to from the last five years.

3-0 up on Portugal was probably the most glorious WTF is going on moment in decades.

Not to mention we pulled the 2002 Cup off with half a team of MLS players... and half that played in college, not academies.

It's a shame that all we had to show for it the next cycle was a bleh showing in 2006 and... Freddy Adu. Don't forget that we somehow broke into the top 10 of FIFA's rating system and didn't get a Pot 1 seeding so our proceeding fall from top was pretty craptastic.

This is all besides the point since we all know the real reason the USA bombed out this week....

Come on. We looked like shite in the group stage and only advanced because we somehow overcame a 6 goal differential on the last day of group play.

Not really. The core of the team played in top divisions in Europe.

Friedel, O'Brien, Reyna, Hejduk, Lewis, Sanneh, Berhalter. Even vets like Earnie and Keller and Regis. And McBride left for Fulham right after, I think. Cherundolo was on the team, but I don't think he played.

We did get some great play through the spine defensively and out on the wings from some MLS guys, though. Mastroeni and Pope, Wolff, Donovan and Beasley namely.

That wasn't some rag-tag group of upstarts. There was a lot of talent on that team.

The optimist in me says we busted our asses in a "meaningless" game against Egypt, got lucky and then came out with picture perfect planning, execution and adjustment - in a game with real consequence against the best team in the world.

Lot of cautious optimism and a few negative posts. No one was really, really, really excited.

But everyone was spot on predicting JK's love affair with Brek

Ok, I'll play...

How were we a laughing stock under Bruce and Bob and how are we not under Jurgen?

What has he done better than his two predecessors?

I think the only "elevation" has been in expectations. And no matter how much y'all denigrate advancing in the World Cup last year, it was still an impressive achievement. Also, I think it was different than previous WCs in that we weren't sneaking up on anyone.
We also, prior to this tournament, were the clear team to beat in CONCACAF. Was that true under Bob?
Clearly, we are no longer the class of CONCACAF, hence why I think it's time to move on from Jurgy.

2007 Gold Cup and winning our group in 2010 pretty much solidified that...

shite went out the window though after losing in 2011.

Let me be clear, I'm not longing for Bob to return by any means... His time was up, but it's a joke that his leash was never longer than an inch while Jurgen is out here pulling shite out of his arse and Sunil is just bending over for him.

It's not about retroactively wishing Bob would've stayed (which no one is doing)... It's about the fact that we haven't progressed under Jurgen.

All this talk about how Jurgen was the choice to further progress for the program.

So far, his only silverware has come by riding Landon Donovan in a tournament where most teams sent there b-squads.

If anything, Jurgen has stunted the growth of the program.

Here's the SB thread from the day Jurgen was hired: LINK

My only response was "Blegh."

It's obvious why Jurgen is "bulletproof." The guy who hired him is the guy who can fire him.

That said, and I've never been a huge Jurgen fan, and I was a bigger Bob fan than most, Jurgen doesn't need to be fired. Christ, if we make the Confed Cup and win our WCQ group all will be forgotten.

I'm more disappointed in that we were sold a revolution of progressive, attacking football, and we are basically the same tactical team minus the grit and unity Bob fostered. I also think Bob was a smarter tactical mind than Jurgen. And I think guys liked playing for Bob, while Jurgen feels a second away from losing the locker room at any given moment.

Bruce did far more with his time than Jurgen has. A WC QF is no joke. fricking Torsten Frings.

Arena's teams usually played better than their talent. We play below ours under Juergen.

Lost to Jamaica (first time ever), drew at Guatemala, required late game heroics from fricking Alan Gordon to beat goddamned Antigua and Barbuda in the first round.

Opened the hex with a full fledged bed-shitting against Honduras, and benefitted greatly from the shite show that was the Snow Classico.

We did finally get our shite together in mid 2013 (don't know what changed - probably the introduction of Brad Evans and Brad Davis) and finished strong, but the six months that just so happened to coincide with Landon's return was about the only time during qualifying where things looked GOOD.
