Who is the best American footballer to never get called up to the World Cup?

I'd imagine it would be some reasonably good player who had the misfortune of being in their prime during our 50 year lull between 1950 and 1990.

Shep Messing or Kyle Rote, Jr.?

There really was no national team for about 30 years, so it's hard to get a read on who "missed out" in that time.

For me, it's probably Chris Armas or Brian Ching.

ETA: Forgot Ching was on the 2006 roster, but didn't play.

interesting fact, in the nine unsuccessful qualification campaigns between the 1950 and 1990 World Cups, the US compiled 11-19-9 record, being outscored 51 goals to 78.


the biggest problem was 1 to 1.5 spots being open to CONCACAF during that period and Mexico existing.

Maybe Chris Klein, who was a good player who had to compete with some great players on the right side at both fullback and midfielder. And Charlie Davies was on his way to be the perfect foil for Altidore and then messed his life up.
