How big were the upsets of Brazil and Portugal? Is there a college football equivalent?

Was Croatia/Brazil all that surprising? Croatia was a finalist in 2018.

I mean, they're all professionals. Croatia was a finalist last world cup, and Morocco has many players that play for top flight clubs.

I know nothing of soccer. That’s why I was asking.

So these weren’t upsets then?

They’re like a 10-14 point dog in football winning upsets. Not a 35 point dog winning upsets.

From a gambling standpoint? Yes
Brazil was -650 to advance
Croatia +375

To Advance
Morocco +240
Portugal -333

Now to win,
Morocco was +450

Croatia over Brazil is little more of an upset than LSU beating Bama this year

Morocco winning is like 9 seed mid major beating a 2 seed in the Elite 8

Brazil was major to me. They are the best team in the tournament.

Morroco wasn't really an upset to me. I had them winning. Spain was the team that was a bad matchup for them and they survived that. They can beat France and England also.

Never have I thought that Brazil were the best, not complete enough for me. They haven't done shite for 20 years now by their standard and are on trajectory to be Tennessee.

Morocco better rest up because if they end up having to resort to catenaccio against England and especially France it's over.

Brazil’s strengths and wins were always based on their midfields being dominant talent wise. Their 9’s were always crazy to good, but it was the midfield that separated them and gave them consistency.

They are mediocre talent-wise compared to that era at the midfield and it shows, because guys like Neymar are having to do way too much creating instead of finishing in live play.

Brazil maybe. But Portugal always felt like a tweener for me. Them losing to Morocco was not shocking.

The best analogy for Croatia is Butler in the basketball tournament in 2011. Had a surprise run to the final in the previous tournament as a 5 seed, lost one of their best scorers, and then somehow made an even more improbable run as an 8 seed the next time.

Morocco, we're talking a Mid Major 11 seed to the Final Four situation. George Mason-esque.

International soccer isn’t at all like building a college football program. It really just has to do with A: How talented your players are and B: how they play together in the system of the head coach. C: The chemistry the players have on the pitch is a big factor.

The odds were in Brazil and Portugal favor.

But Morocco has let in one own goal the entire tournament. So I bet on them advancing.

I have been passionately following both sports for nearly 5 decades and understand them. Don't extract to much from my comment, it was tongue & cheek from the OPs request.

Morocco remind me of that gritty 2004 Greek team but more fun to watch. I'm glad they get the extra day to recover, hope they can pull out a result against France.

This for sure should be taken into consideration, but keep in mind that the WC is every four years. This Croatia team is very different from the one who made the final.

It’s why Germany USUALLY does well. Damn near the entire team is from Bayern
