Rumor is free agency kicks in at 28 yrs old and 8 years of service in the league. This will cover quite a sizable portion of players. Hopefully this will provide traction for a CBA.

Question. That huge deal Espn/fox signed for MLS rights starts this season correct?
That's a huge influx of cash the league has never seen before, did the teams/owners get a large share? I'm just trying to figure out why they would want to screw a golden opportunity to make even more money with exposure unlike anything theyve had before coming their way.

Are the owners retards? The single entity structure only works if you grow when with the league. I can't see it lasting more than one or two more CBA cycles. The league has gained a solid niche foothold but it needs to build on that by making players have a good enough salary to make the league more attractive.

No I just dont think the league is above being criticized esp with a joke of a commissioner like Garber spouting off about being a top league in 2022.
Ive been consistent in how the franchise model is holding the league back. It worked great in starting the league but the league has now out grown that. Back when MLS was the only soccer you could watch in the states other than the few champions league games. But now when the EPL is easier to find than the MLS they just cant trout out what ever they want.
I also don't have delusions about how good the quality of the league is. Its League One to lower to mid table championship at best. The problem is depth. People who clam the teams could hack in the championship don't realize the depth quality isn't even close.
Its still behind the 2nd division in Germany which has the best system top to bottom, some good soccer in the 3rd division regional leagues and also Spain. Even though they would thump the bottom of the table teams in those leagues.
I do enjoy the MLS fast pace and physical aspect but technically its got a long way to go.
Sometimes i feel like im auguring with a bunch of Lallas types who just defend it b/c its our league. Like when he said its a top 10 league why bc its our league

They do a great disservice to the game and its shitty.
Go from a great up HD view to a full field thats not even in focus.

But for real, if the league isn't viewed that great around the world a work stoppage will make it worse for potential fans and players.
If the MLS is to become a top league like we all want it will need viewers around the world to compete with other top leagues. It will need mega tv deals around the world to bring in money. Work stoppages caused by its current structure will make people not want to watch around the world.

That will screw over career MLS journeymen who enter the league in their teens

I think Garber overall has done a great job with the league. He isn't always right on every decision but his slow and steady growth plan has worked out pretty well. The league is still only 20 years old. We need to give it some time before worrying about mega tv deals abroad.

I think the issue with full free agency is that the income/transfer market isn't there yet for the owners to reap the rewards for any investment in the youth team. So the age/year of service argument allows them to reap the talent for a period of time before losing it.
It's a stop-gap. It can't be the forever rule, but may be a good compromise while the league grows and builds revenues.
Btw - 26-6 sounds good to me. Just before a lot of guys primes, but most of the good players will have been good players to that point. Not many suddenly become good after that age.

If you scrap the age, then I could see teams holding off on playing a young player. An 18 year old player may deserve to get a few minutes here and there, but they may not play him for a year or two just to prevent his clock from starting.
