I don't think we go with a 3-back against Canada after how easily Canada nullified that in the Gold Cup.

It’s three matches and each is worth 3 points.

Great outcome would have been 9 pts.

Good outcome would be 7pts

Anything less and this team is underachieving out of the gates.

Not sure about that, 5 points means a win and two draws. 6 points would've meant two wins, that would've been great, but that's impossible now.

Bar is set at 5.

I agree, 5 is the bar here... Would love to see 7 honestly, but won't be upset at 5

Tie away from home and win at home and you go to the World Cup. We have one home game and two away this window. Seven points would be nice but five points isn’t something to melt about if it happens.

Yep, and I think Canada and Jamaica are going to be easier road games for us.

I'm happy anytime we get a point at these shithole central american countries where we need dudes in riot gear protecting our 18-year-old best player while taking a corner.

That shite isn't happening in Jamaica and Canada.

When we play a lower skilled team like El Salvador can we
1. Not get suckered into playing boom ball.
2. Settle the ball put it on the deck and build up to use our supposedly superior skill to possess and create chances.
3. Not every turnover is an excuse to break forward.
4. Can we play players where they play for their teams.
Dest plays RB or RWB for Barca. Reyna plays CM for Dortmund. (I would of rather seen Reyna as one of the dual 8's and Aaronson as a wing last night.)

It's going to be a war of attrition in Nashville because Canada had Davies, David and other go the full 90 today as well.

So guys that play 2-3 games a week for club can’t do that for country?

This might sound harsh, but I think this is a loser mentality. Anchoring on what's the minimal bar we need to hit to qualify. My POV is the US should have a mindset to finish top of CONCACAF, winning practically every match in qualifiers.

And why is that? CONCACAF isn't a strong pool.

But it's still an incredibly tough place to play.

Because you are setting yourself up for perpetual disappointment

In terms of soccer, correct, but there are factors beyond soccer that go into it. Yesterday wasn't a soccer match. These games at shitty third world countries with shitty field and police in riot gear and the fans barricaded with a 10 foot fence between them and the field will never be soccer matches.

If we would've done what say Canada did last night (draw at home after playing all of their best players for 90+), then yeah I'd be disappointed, but I feel the exact opposite about last night.

I'm relieved that we rolled out a lineup with Tim Ream and nine players playing in their first ever World Cup Qualifier, in a shitty environment no less, and walked away with a point and no injuries, red cards.

If we beat Canada and draw away to El Salvador and Honduras in this window, I will view that as nothing other than a successful start to this WCQ campaign, knowing that we have much more winnable road matches coming up at Jamaica and Canada where those matches will be played on actual soccer pitches.

It was simpyl an ugly match all the way around, but the good sign is the team never looked rattled and didn't play much on its back foot. They were miserable in the final third, a function of not having Pulisic and still searching for a striker, but they had the bulk of the chances in the game.

The USMNT won the xG battle 1.78-0.32. Now, xG isn't everything, but it is a good rough tool, and it show that the US dominated the game, but simply couldn't finish. They should have found that goal, and played well enough to do so. If they play like this throughout qualifying, I'm not worried.

Only Mexico won, so it's not like we lost pace on the standings. But it turns Canada and Honduras into more important games. You have to beat Canada at home, and Honduras is pretty much the same quaity as El Salvador, and it'll be on the road. You wanted to beat one of the two, now it has to be Honduras.

For a young squad missing its best player, this wasn't the worst result, and I do like how they played overall, save for the finishing. Who would've guessed we wouldn't be talking about Tim Ream?

Even Mexico has only won 8 road games in the hex starting with the 1998 cycle.

2018 - USA, T&T
2014 - Jamaica
2010 - Costa Rica
2006 - Costa Rica, Guatemala
2002 - Jamaica
1998 - El Salvador

What’s the reasoning behind playing dest on the left?

I assume one big factor was that so Yedlin could play on the right and provide some experience that this group lacks

For me, yedlin was one of the worst players for the US yesterday. Don’t recall him ever getting forward and seemed like every time he had possession he was just blasting the ball downfield and giving it away.

Tyler Adams was my best field player out there.

I'll give Yedlin a pass. With Dest getting forward too much, he had to hold back. He also had Aaronson in front of him being invisible. Maybe it was because Yedlin couldn't get him the ball, or maybe it was on Aaronson.

Agree with all of this except El Salvador being level with Honduras. I think Honduras is much stronger and it’s going to be a battle coming out of there with a point.
