Young teams need more of the experienced father figure profile that players yearn to rise to the occasion. Gregggg is a flimsy I’m a cool uncle type.

He’s been a great recruiter and the players really buy into what he’s doing. But you’ve got to get the results.

Yep, and you can make the argument that his results are on par with previous coaches.
All depends on the World Cup.
As of now, the best things Gregg has done is being the first coach to actually have his team dictate the play with Mexico and the recruitment of Musah and Dest.
To this point, as annoying as some of his shite is, he has been a net positive for the program.

yep, Gregg annoys me just as much as anyone else but beating Mexico 3 times in a calendar year is nothing to scoff at. and something that probably won’t happen again for a long time since neither of us have to qualify next cycle

Does it matter that this is the worst iteration of Mexico that I've seen since the 1995 team? If not, good job Gregg.

2013 bruh

Wait to set the bar. Also, this why I think Gold Cup needs to haVe terms like Japan. Some fans think beating Costa Rica is an achievement.

2013 was poor but 95 was worse. They were going through a generation change and it showed. I remember we beat them 4-0 and it could have been 6 or 7.

This. My complaint since the 94 WQ.

did we beat the 95 team 3 times in a row?
and if the results don’t matter, what does? FWIW I think he should be fired today to salvage any chance of having a decent WC

considering our record against them in the last decade, I hate to break it to you, but it is

If our bar is based on Costa Rica, then sure. But man, that is low.
Posted on 9/24/22 at 4:38 pm to Alyosha
it’s been 8 years since we played in a world cup. our bar is pretty fricking low
that’s not a value judgement. it’s a factual statement

We can play facts game all day long, but I’m not arguing against that.
My problem is our imagination is too small by the “celebrating wins against Costa Rica” motif. It’s a trap…ie, fans who celebrate Ferreira scoring 4 goals against Grenada and think he’s a lock. It’s small minded with expectations set too low.
Until the USSF get its head of its arse with nepotistic hires and such, we’ll still be celebrating wins over the CRs of the world, stroking our egos by mainly winning at home, thus wasting young talent. And repeating the mantra of, “well…at least gregggg has beaten Mexico” is a classic example of proving this point.

But no one is arguing that our bar should be that low. It’s just that that’s where things stand and it wasn’t going to get raised above that this cycle regardless who the coach was.
We came off the most embarrassing cycle in modern us soccer history. These last four years were about recovering from that. People who thought we were going to break in an entirely new player pool within the last 3 years and suddenly become world beaters were always going to be disappointed.
No shite we all want the program to be a higher pedigree than it is right now, but we also have to understand just how far we have fallen before Gregg was even hired.

I not talking about just the last 8 years, I’m speaking about since the 94 WC, riding the wave of finishing in the 16 round, hosting the WC, and establishing the league two years later. That’s the trajectory of measurement.

And part of that trajectory includes nosediving 4 years ago
