I'm a newbie, so can y'all tell me the biggest difference between the two titles?

More specifically, if England won the Euro 2020 how would that measure up to winning a World Cup?

The difference is that the Euros is a UEFA-specific tournament while the WC includes every confederation from around the world. The WC that features the last 32 is actually the culmination of a longer tournament, with the last 32 stage technically called the World Cup Finals.

Essentially, every confederation around the world has their own tournament to crown their confederation champion, which is usually synonymous with the continent where the confederation is based, with a few exceptions around the world. So UEFA has their tournament, the European Championship, while CONCACAF has their own tournament, The Gold Cup, with eligibility in the respective tournaments only extended to respective confederation members.

That's the essential difference, but someone else probably has a simpler explanation.

Not that great
But still great

Would be like winning the conference title, but not the national title

Euros probably displays better soccer and games while the World Cup is still more important.

Euros are like winning the SEC in football or baseball and the WC is winning the national tournament.

Sure the WC is a bigger deal than euros because it includes countries from all over the globe but the depth of europe is such that winning the euros can be as much or more difficult than the WC. The WC ends up with some minnows that are just not very good. The euros end up with just about every team being a high quality team.

Thanks guys, that helps.

Also from what I've seen this tournament, it's way more entertaining than say, EPL matches.

I agree with all of the replies in this thread.

I am a much bigger fan of international tournaments than club soccer. However i would say that elite club soccer is played at a higher quality because those guys are together for 8 months while these national team players are together 5-6 times year for a week and then for a month before the major tournaments.

I will add that if England wins, it will be a national party and I wouldn’t be surprised if the following Monday is a national holiday.

From an American point of view I agree

That said, I'd argue most in England have far more enthusiasm about their club team than the national team. At least that's what I've seen/heard. I don't know how that works with Spain, Italy, Germany, etc.

That probably has more to do with England national team being perennial under achievers. If England ever won anything the whole country would celebrate harder than any English club fan group would for any club title.

I think that's probably true for all the big nations. The intra-country rivalries run very deep.

I'd say that's not surprising. We just don't really have a comparison. I guess NBA to the Olympics is sort of comparable, but not completely. Imagine if American football was the biggest international sport as well as our biggest national sport. For 10 months a year, Saints fans hate Falcons players. Now, for this tournament you have to throw that all away. I can see it being difficult for English fans.

I think new US soccer fans by default underestimate the depth of loyalty to club teams over there because international soccer is often the gateway to club loyalty for US fans. It's the first love and then to sustain it you pick a club and follow them, maybe have an MLS team, etc.

When you realize a lot of these clubs in Europe are genuinely neighborhood clubs that have been in the same section of town for 100 years, it makes a lot more sense why they live and breath that more than the national team. And that's without bringing in the political issues that depress support for England, etc.

This

the Euros is the best tournament in terms of quality of play

They nailed it with how they expanded the field properly

The US had a more difficult schedule at Copa 2016 than Portugal had en route to the Euro title that year.
