My bad on the LOL's, but this is kind of in that same tier of anti-discussion.

ETA: Not that I disagree that calling Howard top 3 is off base.

szcz's shot stopping has never been questioned, but his gaffes, aerial prowess and distribution have always been lacking.

This is what bothers me the most. For that reason I think if I could pick between the Pole and Timmay, I'd go Timmay all the way.

Well I explained my reasoning on why I thought it was bullshite. Hell I always explain my reasoning. I honestly don't understand how someone could look at Howard and say "that's a top 3 GK in the world." It sounds insane and it smells like bullshite.

I wouldn't want to choose either, as they are both good goalkeepers, but not ideal. Szcznesy has the higher ceiling, and his distribution has improved tremendously. He's still prone for an error a game, but he's improved so much in the last year that I hope he keeps pushing on.

How do we determine what a goalie's ceiling is? Or the ceiling of any player for that matter. That sort of stuff seems so hard to predict.

Currently, I would still choose Howard. In the future I guess it's possible that Szcz could be better.

A lot of it is just by watching. You don't become the starting GK for a CL club at twenty without serious talent. Szcznesy and De Gea also have the length that Howard doesn't, which gives them a higher ceiling. The only thing that I would choose Howard over Szcznesy is that Howard is less prone to silly errors, but Szcznesy is as good if not better than Howard in shot-stopping, organizing a D, and his distribution in my opinion is better. Both De Gea and Szcznesy have world-class potential, and are already on Howard's level. The fact that Szcznesy and Howard are having nearly identical seasons speaks to this.

. Howard is very good on a team that allows him to excel at shot-stopping, but he's no better than Friedal was for a decade in the EPL, and no one thought he was a top ten GK in the world, ever.

I think at his peak at Rovers, Friedel was considered top 10 by even the biggest Eurosnobs.

Howard has held his form for longer, but I think Peak Friedel was better than Peak Howard.

I don't recall that, though I remember people saying he was the best GK in the EPL.

Most definitely. Friedel was awesome for a while.

I think I agree with you except for the distribution part. I'm still not impressed with it, but it's probably getting better.

FWIW, Several high profile pundits named Friedel as their GK in their EPL Team of the Decade at the end of the 2000s. He was very well-respected during those years. It would be arbitrary to go back and try to nail down whether he qualified as top whatever in the world during that time though.

EPL-centric this board is.

Well, that's probably precisely what is causing it, but it's not really that surprising. It's not easy to evaluate goalkeepers. They don't usually do a whole lot, their shortcomings are not always easy to identify, and they are not always put in situations to demonstrate their abilities or their shortcomings, e.g., it usually takes the Champions League to remind me that Victor Valdes is completely incapable of dealing with crosses when challenged.

szczers has a 63.5% pass completion rate with 6.5 accurate long balls a match (out of 17.9 passes per match total). howard a 58.9% rate with 3.5 accurate long balls per match (out of 18.9 passes per match total). i think the long ball thing probably has more to do with sagna being a great target striker vs LWs, but still, pretty dang impressive.

stats from whoscored, so...probably suck.

Howard is not top 3, nor likely top 5 in the world, but he is closer to world class elite status at his position than anyone else on the national team.

Currently, Bradley is the only other player on the roster who even approaches world class and that status took a hit reputationally when he bolted Serie A for MLS.

Eh. He's been showing his class with TFC. He's pretty much been the undisputed best player on the field every time I've seen him play.

I don't think we have any world class players. That doesn't mean we don't have some very very good players, but the phrase world class has elite connotations that I don't think any of our players deserve.

Agreed. Waiting for the day, though.

Friedel was a monster shot stopper well into the 2000s, i would put howard just behind him and in front of keller.

Same. Friedel, Howard, a gap, then Keller.
