Maximize broadcasting revenue. That's what it's all really about. Same with expanded tournament. It wasn't really so cape verde or the little guy play, its about tv rights.
I guess the motivation for players might be the third-place medal and a performance bonus? I probably wouldn't give a shite though if I was France or England. If the US was in that game, frick yeah I'm excited for it.
