Do you not see how this is a detriment to the USMNT going forward?

During the World Cup? Sure.

During every other match? They get about the same viewers as an MLS match

Of course I do. I wasn't arguing that MLS isn't important to the USMNT. I said earlier in the thread that it's THE most important factor going forward. What I'm saying is the MLS needs to get better, and I don't see anything wrong with Jurgen criticizing them.

What exactly was fair about his criticism?

her tweet is accurate...bash it all you want, but it's correct.

If Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook didn't play basketball as kids and, instead, spent the same time training as Michael Bradley did...day for day...they would be LIGHT YEARS better players than bradley. Faster, stronger, quicker, etc. They are just better athletes.

If Dwyane Wade didn't play basketball but instead played soccer, he'd be 1000x times a better striker than Altidore (not saying much).

In each age group from age 5 and up, there are literally tens of thousands of kids in America who are WAY better athletes than the soccer players we ultimately will be putting on the pitch.

The hope is that this will change over time...but it won't until the MLS gets an inner-city rep and can pay the average player millions of dollars.

D-Wade has played basketball all of his life and still doesn't have a consistent jumper. You think he'd be great at soccer because of the way he used to be able to dunk a basketball? On top of that, his knees are glass and that would have arisen much quicker playing soccer than it did with basketball.

Just an asinine argument on so many levels.

I could just as easily argue that Jozy is just as good if not better of an athlete than Paul, Wstbrook and DWade. It's really idiotic to compare across sports to determine if guys would be good in the other sport.

I tend to think that my generation playing soccer, but being coached by little league dads who bought a book on soccer, probably has something to do with our slow development of the game.

I'm sure the larger answers have to do with our national apparatus for supporting elite young players, but I think we will definitely progress in how young talent is developed across the board, and hopefully that will open up where we can look for future talent.

You can't coach speed and size. The US knows this as well and the US Youth Soccer's internal grading instructs them to find the tallest and biggest prospects with ages closest to the age qualification dates of various teams.

This is changing. Under Jurgen they are very much moving away from this model.

You guys are not paying attention...I'm not saying "pick dwyane wade up and move him to soccer 3 years ago and he'd be a better striker."

I'm saying if wade and Altidore spend the identical time playing the game, it wouldn't be close.

You guys can't be this dense to think that you can't objectively measure athleticism??

I bet The Rock would have made a good goalie because he's big and athletic.

That's my point, and the tweet's point...our best athletes are self-selecting out of soccer as young kids. The fact that anyone is disputing that is beyond asinine.

Our best athletes live in a hip-hop world where rappers who can't play basketball own NBA franchises.

There is no money and no "swag" with soccer as far as young kids in America are concerned.

yeah but the dwyane wade thing

(People also acting like technical skill would be developed the exact same way with the exact same results for USMNT Player A and Non-Soccer Player B is hilarious, too.)

No, he's not. Despite his size and supposed athleticism, he couldn't make it as an NFL football player.

Is entirely accurate. Do you not think Dwyane Wade is a freak athlete? Because he is. He has other-worldly body control and, when younger, unreal measureables.

I guess vertical jump doesn't matter, right? Because neither Altidore nor anyone else playing soccer for the US is getting anywhere near the vertical of Wade or any other elite athlete playing other sports.

Wade was 6'5", 215 with a 36" vertical jump when he was drafted...he was an insane athlete.

Uhhh, what? Are you suggesting that developing technical skill is random? Jesus. Technical skill in soccer is developed the same way it is in EVERY sport. The better the athlete, the better the skill developed.
