Take your pick: Samaras or Dempsey?

I feel like both of these guys are similar talents. If you want to argue against that, this is the place. They also both have had some very successful club runs, but neither is considered world class. Neither is a true striker, but both can play that false nine.

Who do you take in his prime?

I think Dempsey is better. Not looking at stats or anything. I just never really rated Samaras that high.

ETA: During their peak Dempsey was a lot more important to Fulham than Samaras was at Celtic.

Samaras probably smells like spoiled sweet onions. Dempsey.

I've always thought Dempsey was a hit overrated, although he has played well this year.

I think Samaras has a much higher work rate. Dempsey is lazy as hell sometimes.

I agree.

I agree, but no one really expects Dempsey to play defense. I guess it's a trade off between goal scoring and assists or goal creating opportunities.

ETA: Samaras gets called lazy a lot too. I don't know if he's Dempsey lazy though.

how is this even a question

Samaras is awful with the ball at his feet and is slow as frick

their styles of play are not even comparable

Samaras is more of a target striker and would be awful playing in the midfield while Clint can play multiple positions.

They aren't very similar players. Samaras is a natural striker who is inconsistent as a target player. When he is played wide he's marginally better. His goal return is pretty bad.

Dempsey made his name as a wide midfielder who scored from timed late runs into the box. Samaras would never in a million years be able to score double digit goals in the PL, and he would never in a billion years be able to do it two seasons in a row.

This is a really silly comparison in all honesty.

Dempsey.

Both were acquisitions for lower level EPL Clubs around the same time. Dempsey was effective and turned his stint at fulham into a transfer upwards, whereas Samaras was hot garbage at man city and was sent out to a lessor league.

I was going to bring this exact stat in here too.

To the ones calling dempsey overrated need to go back and watch him at fulham.

Meh. He was the focal point, and his shot conversion was atrocious. He just took a million shots.

Dempsey doesn't have what it takes to play well for a top club. Neither does Samaras. But I will always think Dempsey is overrated on this board.

I think he's over rated in the sense that he's not a true striker, and yet he doesn't play defense needed to be considered a balanced midfielder. I know he's a CAM or Second Striker, but he still just kind of lingers around. Like a Berbatov, but not as good.
He is a good dribbler, but I think he is widely over rated (at least in his mind).
Yes, he had some amazing seasons with Fulham, but I don't think he starts and succeeds at a top European team where he has to earn his spot week in and week out.

ETA: Berbatov lingering and Dempsey lingering are two complete levels. I rate Berbatov way higher than Dempsey.

still dont get how you can compare the two

totally different types of players and one is much better and always has an impact in the game do to seeing the ball much more from either playing on the wing or in the #10 role. Samaras would drift off in lala land in SPL games.

Berbatov has absurd skills with the ball. Deuce not in the same class. But I would prefer him over Berba playing for a club I support.

Samaras is shite.

What an odd selection of player comparisons this thread brought about

still not even comparable players

Berbs is a true striker who can play up top alone. Clint can't

It's hard to judge because the Greeks play such a shitty brand of attacking football.

Samaras plays with good composure over the ball. He holds up play more than a traditional striker.

Dempsey is more of a creative false 9 who likes to run at goal.

They aren't really comparable to me, but I would take Dempsey - he just has the extra bit of quality.
