Watch as many EPL games as you can this weekend, repeat, and you will eventually gravitate towards a team.

This. You can get most of them on NBC sports now a days but Champions League games (aka the Super Bowl of Europe, a year long tournament between all the top teams across all the European leagues) might be on ESPN.
What kind of base are you starting with? Do you know positions and such or are we starting from scratch?

Last time I went to London i asked the cabbie what he thought about sports and he basically called queens park rangers a bunch of dicks

He wasn't wrong. I think first bit of homework should be to read about the rules, especially offsides since that one seems to confuse the shite out of people, and how free kicks, penalties, corners, goal kicks, etc are called. Try the wiki article maybe.

I remember watching the usa play the uk and a usa goal was called back.
My friend who played soccer was upset, so I joined the indignation. I had no idea what he issue was because it looked like a basketball fast break where the offense outran the defense.

Offside in soccer is really just like offsides in football. The offensive player must be in front of the last defender at the time the ball is played (or snapped in football). Just think of it that way.

You can still receive a ball behind the last defender, but you have to be in line with the ball, or behind it, when the pass is made.
Also, these rules only apply to players in the attacking half of the field.

Playing FIFA will likely help you the most when it comes to figuring out the rules and strategy. Watching as many games as you can and also watch highlight shows like ESPNFC. Also, go on wikipedia and read about the history of the leagues and the clubs.

and also players, teams, leagues, ect..
then, you already have some expectation on who should be good. it helps when watching when you already know alittle about the teams.
i just got balls deep in soccer last year after being on the fringes. reading articles and blogs was pretty intimidating, but just keep reading and watching and pretty quick you pick up on the narratives, which is what makes watching sports so great.
