I've been watching rules explanations on Offsides and what not.
What makes me laugh a little though is the absolute insistence on the throw-in being with feet planted
I'm not sure why, but it seems like an arbitrary sticking point.

Once I actually am able to get Fifa or watch more games it may make sense.

Is this that tribalism I was hearing about
I could watch Bundesliga, serie A, whatever that Spanish league is, i have options if I wanted.

Anyways I'm not sure what leagues are worth my time or not. I'd probably stick to stuff in the UK area if for nothing else than heritage, but whatever.
I could just as easily enjoy something as random as Japanese Soccer.

I don't want this to come off the wrong way. But you can call it soccer. Its what we call it in America and there's no reason to be apologetic about that. Calling it football can rub people, fans of the game included, the wrong way.

I'm not upset. Just trying to give you some advice since you're new to the game.
Many people believe using "football" (In the US, talking to Americans) promotes the "soccer is something we don't do" mentality.

That mentality is a problem.
I've never really felt that soccer really threatened any American sports, so I've never really understood the irrational hatred.

I've heard soccer in Ireland (Irish Republic) before too. Small world I suppose.

Yea soccer is actually a British term. Its commonly used in Ireland and Australia. I think a few others too.

Get up early tomorrow morning and watch Liverpool/Arsenal. Watching Suarez, Sturridge, and Coutinho link up is quite entertaining.

magic city blazer: I think you have the right idea. Just call shite what you want and start watching a lot of matches. You'll catch on to all the rules. They're actually pretty simple compared to other sports though there's a ton of different tactical approaches you'll begin to see.
As far as leagues, if you get all the channels, I'd simply watch the top of table match ups from the EPL, Serie A, La Liga, Bundesliga and even PSG v Monaco from France and definitely check out the Champions League matches.
You'll get a people that cheer lead for a certain league but one of the real treats of soccer is the difference in style and atmosphere of the major European leagues.
If you're the analytical type I'd recommend checking out Zonal Marking website and reading their breakdowns of matches that you've watched.
