Why isn’t it already?

What are the benefits of aligning it?
What are the drawbacks of aligning it?

No one wants to play December games in Toronto, Chicago, or Minnesota. And fans don’t want to sit in 20 degree snow flurries either. It’s a league that depends on gate revenue more than most others.

How do Russia, Norway, Sweden, etc work around that and manage to be more in line with the rest of the world?

Norway and Sweden are on the same schedule as MLS. Begin in late March/early April, end in November/December.

How do Russia,

They start in July (this year July 12th), they then take a break and don’t play December through the end of Feb. Start back up in early March.

Norway

Their league does not run with regular Europe.
They start end of March and end early December

Sweden

They do the same

Norway and Sweden are basically similar to the MLS season

Do they take breaks during FIFA International windows?

ETA: ^ my biggest gripe with MLS schedule. Just honor the same windows

ETA2: Honest question - are the winters in Chicago and Toronto that much worse than Germany and Poland? That's the trade off to playing summer games in Houston, Dallas, Orlando, etc

I don't know about every window, but it looks like Sweden took a month off for the 2018 WC. Norway did not.

Yea I’m not sure of this
I’d rather sit bundled up in 20-30 degree weather with some booze in my system to warm me up.
Than 100 degree with humidity

Same here which is why I ask. I know our country is more unique that we have to deal with both extremes. But Germany deals with it. London is further north than Chicago. Just seems overblown but I could be way off

The average high in London in Dec/Jan/Feb is 48/48/49.
The average low in London in Dec/Jan/Feb is 40/40/40.

The average high in Chicago in Dec/Jan/Feb is 37/32/36.
The average low in Chicago in Dec/Jan/Feb is 27/22/26.

I'd wager the issue may be more about player safety than fan comfortability.

London doesn’t get as cold as Chicago though.
You’ll see negative days in the winter in Chicago not in London
I know that for a fact not sure about Germany or Poland so was wondering the same

That’s fair.
Someone else was talking about fans/tickets so I just commented on that with my opinion

I get that. I do think it's still easier to get fans inside the stadium for a game in the middle of the regular season with a night game in the summer than a temp in the 20s (or worse) in the winter.

My opinion certainly isn’t a popular one

Its called a winter break.....

MLS championship memorial day weekend would kill it ratings wise.

Get the leagues most important part of the season away from competing with the NFL and College Football.

Not to mention Soldier Field is right on Lake Michigan... lake effect snow, wind... it would make for some interesting games..

MLS should strive to be better than the standard of two lower tier leagues.

MLS getting on the international calendar would be huge for a whole bunch of reasons.

Winter break in December and January

then work the schedule that places like Chicago don't host a home game until March

If MLS really wanted to do this and be taken as a serious league they could do it.

Germany is a better comparison

London is just weird, winters in England are really not that cold. Once you get into Scotland it gets cold and they have a winter break.

The Germans suck it up tho, ive been to some cold arse games well below freezing leading up to the winter break.
