Me and stewie have watched him play in MLS for a year in a half. The guy is the best distributor out of the back that the league has seen in a couple of years.

If you can catch the hyperbole train before it leaves the station, he's not even the best distributor out of the back ON HIS OWN TEAM.

Yeah Rafa Marquez is world-class in that department. Ream is still good though, especially at his age.

Statistically, and in actuality he is.

And to be fair, he was a midfielder in the Bundesliga, who the US always played at defense because:

A. We had no other options, and B. the only thing our midfield was required to do in the 90s was run up and down the field.

I can't find a story that I saw on MLS back in april. But, I do have Castrol Index stats.

Rafa Marquez is in 30th place in the league with an 8.46
Tim Ream is in 42nd with an 8.24

Do you mean the OPTA twitter stat?

New York Red Bulls' Tim Ream has misplaced just 13 of his 163 passes in MLS in 2011 & has the best passing accuracy (91.3%).

Interesting. Whatever Ream's stats are, Marquez comes in with the reputation as a world-class distributor from his Barca days when he would start attacks. His cross-field balls in those days were incredible. If Ream can outperform him in that respect, then that will be impressive indeed.

I just found that.

LINK

Of course that was near the beginning of the season, and Ream has seen a dip in his form since then.

I have their heights and weights, but I don't see how that defines them as a distributor, or is relevant to the topic at hand.

In fact this group of defenders from the Castrol Index could arguably be the worst distributors in MLS...

quote:

10 Ugo Ihemelu FC Dallas
12 Bobby Boswell Houston Dynamo
13 Danny Califf Philadelphia Union

...outside of Marvell Wynne, who has to be the worst distributor in American soccer, from age 8 (boys AND girls) and up.... and he's two spots behind Ream.

So, either this metric doesn't measure one's ability to distribute, or you'd better choose another metric on which to base your argument.

I think Ream is as good of a distributor as Rafa. He isn't nearly as good of a marker, though You gotta love the hustle.

This metric demonstrates overall play.

Ugo, Bobby, and Califf are near the top because they make a ton of challenges.

I looked everywhere for them. I couldn't even find OPTA's twitter anymore.

MLS pays Opta, and releases the data they wish to release, I suppose.

The opta website is advertising for the service.

More than likely, the teams have the option to pay OPTA for the statistics, or use their own statisticians to compile the data.

I'd guess that all of the teams don't subscribe, so OPTA doesn't want to make the info "public."

If we can't score on Canada, we're in some trouble.

They've got an average MLS centerback starting, and he's not the worst player on their back four.

Agreed, we SHOULD control the game tonight, and win handily.

A win should never warrant a melt down, but a poor performance is more than enough reason to be pessimistic about the immediate future.

Hainault is a step above adequate, but that's about it. Don't know anything about the other defenders. Was Paul Stalteri hurt?

Don't know how they'll do the midfield, but if it's Will Johnson - Julian De Guzman - Terry Dunfield - Atiba Hutchinson, with DeRo and Rob Friend up top, and Ali Gerba off the bench... our D better come prepared to work.

Those guys are good enough to put us in a bind, if we're lazy like Saturday.
