I just don't want to see Gooch out there. Which means we need Boca in the middle to pair with Goodson. So that leaves Bornstein and Lichaj. I'd be ok with either. Two not so good options but we don't have any good options.

Anyway, I think Gooch was more of a liability at the World Cup than Bornstein was. And he doesn't look to have gotten back in form since then either. When Gooch had it together he was obviously far and away a better player but he just looks lost now. Plus, I'd just generally rather have a liability at left back than center back.

The real question is whether or not you go with Ream at CB instead of Lichaj at LB.

I think you do.

Tim Ream has looked good in every cap he's played up to this point, and there aren't a whole lot of teams who can embarrass a defense like Spain, especially when your midfield isn't doing anything with the ball.

But I guess Ream won't be playing since he went the full 90 against spain.

Makes me think it's going to be bornstein.

I don't really like any of these options

I like Ream as a prospect though. And it wouldn't really bother me to see Boca-Ream-Goodson-Cherundolo. But I still think I'd go with Bornstein/Lichaj-Boca-Goodson-Dolo, just because I'd feel better about the center back partnership.

I don't think Ream was as bad as people made him out to be against Spain though. He was bad but a couple guys were worse. He's also a young center half, its not surprising that he had a bad day.

You also need to look at what a team's strength is. You could get away with Bornstein/Lichaj more against a team like the U.S. who doesn't really have out and out wingers.

Even though I've said Bornstein did ok at the World Cup its not like he had to go up against any elite right wingers.

I don't know what Canada has, or how they play. I thought they had Junior Hoillett but apparently he wasn't called up, or they couldn't call him up.

It was also his first game against really elite competition. Spain is on another level technically from what he's been up against in a game.

I'm just glad some of us saw past the Spain scoreline, and aren't throwing Ream under the bus.

Since we're on the topic, I'm going to refer back to one of my earlier posts.

Did anyone else notice Ream's recovery speed. I remember a point in the game where he caught up to Negredo after giving up about 5 yards to him.

At that point I was impressed. He's certainly
underrated as an athlete, and his composure on the ball exceeds just about any defender in US history.

Almost no doubt in my mind if you lined up all of our centre halfves, and had a 40 yard race. Ream would win.

Negredo wasn't exactly burning it. But Ream's problem won't be athleticism. It's awareness and body positioning. He gets his hips in bad positions.

He needs to learn to get his shoulders parallel with a sideline and move vertically without turning his hips. He'll be fine. I hope he starts. I thought he was bad, but only a couple of times (albeit really bad times). Canada shouldn't give him trouble.

I want to say Goodson would win that.

Gooch would scare them all except for Demerit who may bite him.

Assuming wins versus the People's Republic tonight, and the Canal Jockeys on Saturday, I think he starts versus Canteloupe.

I think we see Gooch until then.

This might be the biggest flaw in his game in general. You could extrapolate that and say most US defenders struggle in that department.

I'd have a really hard time crowning anybody as the best at anything after four caps.

If you scour the internet long enough, I bet you can find a quote from 2006 about Eddie Johnson being the best goal scorer in US history.

Much like Agudelo, give the kid time to develop.

Not old enough to remember number 5.

But I remember Pope well, he was a good player.

I think Ream, even at his young age, surpasses Pope as a distributor.

Bingo. But I know Gooch will be in for Goodson or Ream, and JB might start and move Boca central. Not really sure. Bob is anything but consistent.

Me and stewie have watched him play in MLS for a year in a half. The guy is the best distributor out of the back that the league has seen in a couple of years.
