Hulk is my #1.
Rooney is viewed as overrated bc the English media is nuts.

Haha my bad. Good catch. It has been changed. Now I do realize overrated is a point of view and mine probably differs from a lot of you. For example, I do know Keane is probably one of the top 5 Irishmen ever to play the sport. I really did not follow him until rumors came out that he was being targeted by LFC, which was in the later part of his career. But to me, he was overrated, especially when David Villa was the other target. LFC brought him after a few great Champions League runs like he was going to put them back there and he did a bunch of nothing. Van Persie really isnt overrated, I just cant stand his attitude. He always acts like a spoiled brat, which really isnt debatable. I stand by what I said about Arshavin and Podolski though. Sorry you Gunners are butthurt about it.

I would say you don't know what you are talking about. When Arshavin was bought, he was bought only to help Arsenal achieve fourth place. His last year at Zenit (where he led them to the UEFA Cup, logging 27 assists in a fantastic season) as well as his summer at Euro 2008 showed he was a fantastic player. For the first 18 months at Arsenal, he was also excellent. We didn't lose a game when the trio of Fabregas, Van Persie and Arshavin played. Then VP got hurt, Arshavin was moved upfront, and he was never the same player. Podolski was the link player between the old German teams and the new German teams. He might of been hyped by his performance in 2006, but his form at Bayern pretty much quashed any illusions about his level. He's a damn fine role player who wants to play centrally, like many other players.
You don't know what you are talking about because including Van Persie merely because of his attitude and Robbie Keane because his six months at 'Pool is retarded. Who ever rated Keane to begin with? Benetiz also decided to go after Barry meaning that he was going to ship out Alonso, who turned out to be the most important cog in Benetiz's attack.

Benitez actually didn't want Keane, he said as much...
I always have kinda liked him... he's great for the galaxy!

Whoever bought him must be glad that Kenny bought Carroll and Downing. Was it Hicks? Comolli? The Barry chase was all Benetiz if I remember though. Hence why Arsenal was linked with Alonso at the time. Then Alonso goes to Real and 'Pool's midfield falls apart.

I'd also add that while I think Gareth Bale is a very good player, he is way overrated in terms of what Real Madrid paid for him.
ETA: Based on his play before and after being bought.

Of the ones listed so far, I probably most agree with Hulk and Rooney. What some people see in Rooney's play, I just don't know. . . I don't see it.

How do I not know what Im talking about? You even agreed with me on Podolski. I never said he wasnt a solid or even good player, I said he was overrated. He was thought to be great and an up and coming star, which he hasnt quite lived up to. You even called him a role player.
And I do agree with you on Arshavin being great with RVP and Cesc but he has not been since. Again, overrated is a point of view. After seeing Arshavin and Pavlyuchenko tear up in 2008, I thought both would go on to great club careers. Both have had solid club careers, I just thought they would do better after seeing them rather dominant in 08.

Rick Parry was our director at the time... Yeah, Benitez played with only one striker in his 4-2-3-1 and didn't want to blow £20mm of the transfer budget on another striker...
Yeah, He wanted Barry bad... TBF, Alonso was coming off a not so great season... Of course, he bounced back and played well the next season , but by then the damage was done and Alonso wanted out... the next summer Masch followed out the door... and Gerrard's skill set as a number 10 declined..
The DLP, The Destroyer and the Playmaker... it was a WC midfield..
Back then, we could never get the left side shored up... Reira was a mediocre winger and Aurelio was made of glass...

Then there was that one week where that Italian leftback whose name escapes me played amazing. Beat Real 4-0 and Man U 4-1. He played amazingly well. Was the best leftback in the world that one week.
I always thought Gerrard was at his best as a support striker/no.10. That Gerrard-Torres combo in 2008 was so good. I'm amazed he's adapted his game to the deeper role, but he needs a lot of protection, and doesn't have the finesse of other playmakers.

wasn't there some rift between Alonso and Benitez regarding Alonso leaving, or wanting to leave, to see the birth of his child?

Ive watched him a good bit and just think that he has brilliant moments...
don't get me wrong, I think he's a very good player..
Tottenham also had Modric when they finished top 4... I mean as bad of a season that they had last year, they only finished one place back of the year before...

Giuseppe Rossi
It's hilarious that people think a double digit goal scorer in Serie A wouldn't make the US team, like we have ever had that. He would be among our best players, injuries and all. Rossi's career has been derailed by injury but he's still an extremely effective player. And Fiorentina is better than nearly any team any of our players play for.
Exactly.
Everyone's entitled to an opinion but the guy in this thread saying that Rossi is no longer an elite striker and that he hardly plays for a mid-level club is about the most ill-informed post I've read on this board in a while. Which is saying something during World Cup time.
1. I would say that Fiorentina is better than any club any outfield player we have plays for and by a comfortable margin. When fit he was their best player this season; Cuadrado, Gomez, Valero included.
2. Rossi actually looked better than when was at Villarreal this season for Fiorentina. He didn't seem to have lost a step but his vision and passing were often downright spectacular in a way they were not always at Villarreal. His goal per minute ratio is among top few strikers in all Europe.
3. Rossi was a shoe in not only for the Italian NT but a starting spot before his last setback.
That he still went into the final cut having played in only a couple of matches and not yet a full 90' after coming back from the most recent setback and word being that he still seemed reluctant to go into challenges etc says a lot.
Even given his questionable conditioning, his omission from the roster still caused more controversy in the Italian press than any other and that was him not being chosen over Immobile who just led Serie A in goals and Dortmund bought this summer to Lewandowski.
I realize that a lot people hate him for not choosing the USMNT but that's no reason to just make shite up.

When I said his name, I knew about his injury during his Villareal, but didn't realize his last injury was that serious.
When he left Utd. he was talked about being one of the top young strikers, and after his first injury (largely due to my lack of following Seria A) I hadn't heard of him.
I didn't realize how big his injuries were until I looked it up on Wikipeadia. I believed that since I hadn't heard of him moving to a larger club in Europe, and being left off the Italian side a couple of times, he was struggling in mid-table Italy.
So I will eat crow on that one.

I don't know if this guy has been mentioned yet, but I feel like Tom Cleverly has gotten a lot of hype over the last couple years for someone who is a fairly average player.

It actually wasn't any of your posts that caused my rant.
You came across honestly inquisitive whereas the other guy was spewing some real BS as if established fact.

I don't know if you're serious or not. United probably have the most overrated young players right now.
Cleverly was overrated, despite everyone and their mom making fun of him.
Smalling is another player that gets a lot of hate, but disserves it.
Rafeal is good at attacking, but just a disaster when he has to defend.
Phil Jones is a Rooney, but on defense. I don't agree that Rooney is as overrated as most people think, but he runs a full 90 and seems like he can win a game on his own at times. Phil Jones on the other hand does all the running, but rarely has the defensive output that would make him a starter every week.

I guess Cleverley isn't as overrated now as he was last year so maybe that shouldn't count. United definitely has a lot of young players that are viewed as pretty good players by the general public but haven't really done anything good recently. Nani could probably fit that mold as well along with most of the guys you've mentioned. I think Rooney is a really good player and gets a lot of hate because the expectations are so high for him. I don't know if I can think of one person that is head over heels the most overrated though. Maybe Dani Alves?
