You guys are missing the point. MLS growing is good for the growth of the sport in this country. It needs to be in more markets.

Subpar quality compared to what exactly? Leagues that have existed 5x as long as ours?

And has expansion thus far created a weaker product on the field? No. It has not.

Yea, that's not the point.

We already know this. Expanding mls and adding clubs is not going to prevent us from getting those things you mention. It will actually help us.

More clubs=more soccer presence in the USA=more people watching and playing soccer=more growth of soccer=better more competitive soccer in the long run.

Keep growing.

I've been following the league since it started.

Lol at you if you don't think the league if it really wanted , couldn't have 28 teams at the start of 2018.

But it would have to give up some things to speed up the process. Like stadiums not being built/renovated.

huh they league already has issues in terms of depth and quality and adding 8 teams isn't going to make depth and quality better.

Yea 20 or 30 years from now, but right now 28 teams is way to many. There are only so many quality players to go around. The MLS should not be scrapping the bottom of the barrel to fill its rosters.

The MLS does not have the money to compete on a global scale.

No b/c there are only 20 teams. But making a league too big will definitely lower the quality of players.

Where are all these players going to come from?

Argentina just went from 20 to 30 teams and its been a disaster. This is from a soccer mad country with way better local talent than we have and gets players from all over South America.

Sweet triple post, bro.

Over what period of time did Argentina go from 20 to 30 teams?

You keep saying that MLS could add 8 teams by 2018 but then say it would dilute the pool. What's your point? It's not going to happen.

Don has been a great manager for the league. His model of slow, but sustained, steady growth has worked very well. The quality of the league has really gone up in the last few years in particular. MLS has added a bunch of teams in the past 7 or so years, and the product on the field continues to improve.

This whole argument is kind of moot. The league is not growing faster than the pool can adapt. The US attracts plenty of foreign talent and always will, so I'm not so worried about trying to encourage players to come here so that the league doesn't get "diluted" by the new teams.

Just last year moving 10 established second division teams up. After one year they are already making plans to undo this mess.

Im saying they could but def should not. Even with 5 years 28 still will be too many teams.

Thats bc it was growing to a sustainable amount of teams for a first division. Now passing 20-24 is becoming uncharted water.

There are only so many good players to go around. Thinking just bc expansion didn't hurt the quality before means it won't hurt it when making the league very big, is being extremely naive.

As long as the MLS has its disadvantages like the franchise model, salary cap and lack of real tv money. Moving to 28 teams can very much drop the quality of overall players.

If the commish came out and said we are doing this b/c we will eventually move to an MLS I/MLS II, then this would make perfect sense. But he has over and over said no promotion/relegation ever.

My point was that land area is irrelevant. If anything, it's a detriment since lots of people already bitch about having to make their way to middle of nowhere to watch their teams play, only to stand in line outside of the stadium until halftime because the league already has a tough time finding enough competent ownership groups.

You could expand vertically, too. I wouldn't want to spend MLS money and put up with MLS-level bullshite just to watch an NASL-level team get their shite pushed in every week.

I think MLS is announcing this move to 28 teams as part of its long term strategy. I don't see the MLS as actually having 28 teams until around 2025.

Think about soccer and MLS in the US at 2005 and now. Its quite figuratively night and day in terms of investment, interest, and growth. Is the quality of play worse now than it was in 2005? I would say clearly it is not and that is with around double the amount of clubs. So I believe it is entirely possible to continue to invest in growth while not compromising quality if the investment is executed properly. I look forward to seeing the state of soccer in the country ten years from now. I think it will be dynamic and prosperous and this continued, measured growth of MLS will play a significant role in that realization.

I think Garber and his team at MLS have done an outstanding job with the influx of ownership and clubs. It is no easy task to get quality stadiums in an urban core as they have accomplished with Minnesota, Atlanta, Miami, LAFC, Orlando, and soon to be Sacramento. Most of those situations have required an extensive amount of time and skill. They will be worthy components in the continued growth of soccer in the US.

cwill, regarding Vegas, you are exactly right mate. Vegas is pushing for an MLS club with good support from their city leaders. My concern for them is more in the realities of the city and its economy. The matches must be played at night due to the intense heat and I don't think casino owners want an MLS club as an alternative for entertainment. I do think they have a chance, however, and will challenge St. Louis for that 28th and final spot.

SCH, adding 10 teams in a one year period is retarded. That will never happen in MLS so I would slow the roll about the potential mess a quick expansion might cause. As John mentioned, slow, measured growth has worked thus far for the league.

We should've just left the league at 10 teams. The depth and quality of play was so much better then.

I find myself in the expansion is good camp... If we could sOMEhow lure the Giovinco's of the world, at the same time increasing the capacity of our own player pool... It would be a good thing IMO

We shouldn't try to model our league after the other countries, it just won't happen in the US..
