MLS owners approve expansion to 28 teams

No, New Orleans sadly does not have a chance.
So the league currently has 20 teams.
Here are the teams who will be added or are most likely be added to the league in the next five years:
Miami
LA #2
Atlanta
Sacramento
San Antonio
Minnesota
Las Vegas
St. Louis if they ever get investors
MLS and Don Garber want good investors and good markets with great support. New Orleans has neither for soccer right now. The crowds for the Jesters games aren't very good, whereas Minnesota and Sacramento regularly get 10k+ fans, which for a lower league team is pretty impressive. Additionally, both are in the process of getting brand new, soccer specific stadiums.
I personally think that a team playing here at Yulman Stadium would be AWESOME, and I would go to every game. But again, MLS needs to see a $$$ commitment, and very solid, grass roots, organic support for a potential team in that market.

Tough to gauge the market interest. Personally, I'd buy season tickets the day a NOLA MLS team was announced. On the other hand, you couldn't pay me $50 to go see the Jesters play.
I do see what you are saying. It's unfortunate it comes down to that factor. I was hoping the amazing ticket numbers of the USWNT game would bring New Orleans into consideration.

I don't think Vegas gets a team.

If the league gets to maybe 32-36 teams form MLS I and MLS II. Which would be awesome.
but 28 teams is way to much for a league of this quality right now. But o well.

MLS is watered down enough with 20 teams. I can't imagine adding 8 more teams is going to make the product on the field any better.

It could water down the league, but from a development standpoint if handled correctly it could work out great.

I agree.
More the better. People seem to forget the USA is not like France, Italy, Spain, or the uk. All of those countries could fit inside Texas. This is a huge country and it needs more clubs. A lot more clubs.
It's not like the league will be 28 clubs anytime soon. Keep growing, bit by bit. Build it, they will come.

The MLS could easily be at 28 in two years or less. If they really wanted it too be. Should be at 28 with in 4 to 5.

John, I agree that Indy is more likely than Vegas but Vegas is also serious about getting a team eventually. Personally I would love to see another team down south, like Nola, Birmingham, etc
As far as watering down the league, I don't buy that argument. Look at how many solid foreign players keep coming to the league. Don has done a great job with slow, steady growth so that the quality of play has actually gotten better despite the increasing number of teams. Additionally we are a massive country and having more teams covering more geography and opening up more academies can only help our country's development.

If they gave the clubs the green lights right now they could have them ready by 2018. Will it happen no, but these clubs have been licking at the chops to get the welcome to the MLS

Adding more teams to a league that is already lacking in depth and quality compared to other leagues is competing with can def stunt the overall quality of the MLS.
Just b/c we are huge country doesn't mean we need a huge league. If soccer was our #1 sport and brought in NFL type money then yes of course b/c we would be getting world class talent. But that is not the case.
But since the league is going this massive route, it might as well hit enough clubs to create a two tier system.
To make it sustainable with the amount of games, travel etc.
