Mesut Özil announces his international retirement

It was time for Germany to move forward without him anyway, but it's a shame he's received race charged hate mail. I'm linking his tweet with the larger statement. His picture with Erdogan was always going to cause controversy and he didn't really explain that very well, but whatever. He was an integral part of Germany winning the World Cup in 2014. I'm sure they'll eventually fix their relationship.

He didn't hold anything back in that letter.
And it looks like your link is only to part 3 of his overall statement. Part 2 is pretty juicy too.

He should've played for America, we would've accepted him.

Thats classy anti Semitic crap.
Ozil was a good player. He is German but , just like in America, he was accepted when they wom and calked names when they lose.
Funny I thought the World Cup came off racist free.

When you call the leader of another country ‘[your] president’, you’re gonna get blasted, especially when you play like absolute garbage

Always liked Özil. Shame that he felt unaccepted by German society because the DFB did the unthinkable and performed poorly at the WC.
Having said that, Erdogan is obviously not held in high regard in Germany or most of Europe. I understand it’s Özil’s Turkish roots, but his “German” side should have taken over and helped him realize that a public photo with someone that many view as a tyrant would not be well-received among many Germans. I’d be upset if Frank Martin had taken a smiling, cordial photo with Fidel Castro simply because he’s Cuban-American.
Özil shouldn’t take any of the blame for Germany sucking at the WC, but I’m just saying that it probably wasn’t the best decision to play for Germany and pose for a pic with someone who calls current German politicians “Nazis”

Why wasn't Ozil criticized any of the other times he met with Erdogan?

I am by no means an expert on the subject, but Erdogan’s latest “re-election” seems to be a shady use of his power that caused some backlash from the EU. I also remember reading that Turkey recently jailed a German journalist and that caused a bunch of uproar. You know it’s probably pretty bad when even Americans are becoming more familiar with who Erdogan is.
Mix the political aspect in with the fact that Germany sucked in the World Cup, and you get what has happened to Özil. Again, the blame on him for their failure is completely unwarranted, but I don’t know if he would even be retiring from DFB right now if he just hadn’t taken that picture. Just my thoughts.

That's actually a good explanation. I do think the fact that Ozil wasn't criticized before plays a role in his reaction now. Although his version of events really paints the FA in a terrible light.

Good. He's overrated.

Not really. I've watched this guy a bunch. He's not a goal scorer, but a creater.
Not his fault Hummel's shouldered that ball out. Put it on a fricking platter.
