With the recent news that Rapinoe will retire at the conclusion of the NWSL season, how good of a soccer player was she really? Would she be well-known if it weren't for her antics and ridiculous statements or was she actually a great player?

She was really good from 2010-2016 or so. That cross she delivered to Wambach for the Brazil goal in 2011 was better service than anyone on our current MNT can deliver.

She's been nothing more than a mascot for the last 6 years though.

She would be way less known among the general public, certainly.

How well known are Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd, both of whom are better players than Rapinoe?

She is a very good player but not in the A+ or A tiers of women’s soccer.

A+ would be Hamm, Akers, Lloyd, Morgan, Wambach, and probably Foudy.

And I would have these youngish midfielders from 2019, Kelley O’Hara, Becky Sauerbraun, Hope Solo, and some of 99 starters in the next tier.

Rapinoe would be in the group after that. She is very good but very limited so she needs people to make up for her lack of running so she can coast for 70 minutes before doing something impressive.

On the men’s side, the Eastern European playmaker who barely does anything all game but then gets 2 assists in 8 minutes has been phased out, especially compared to the 90s

In recent years we were on the attack when Press was in and back on our heels when Rap was in.

She is good at being in the right place at the right time, and at penalty kicks, but she isn't a first tier talent.

I’m pretty sure though we aren’t great on the men’s side most of our non mls guys can cross better than U15 boys teams.

Rap might get some mop up time for the u15 team that worked the woman’s team

Being able to put in a good cross has zero to do with speed and athleticism. That's why the women's teams can't compete with the youth teams, not because of ball skills.

I get that you were just posting to shite on the women's team without wanting to have an actual discussion, but even so, if you're going to shite on them, at least know what you're talking about.

She’s probably a top 5 player for the USWNT. But I’ve always thought she was more a product of the talent of the players around her. She’s always seemed to play as if she has more individual talent than she actually has, and holds the ball too long.

She has also set the USSF back decades with her equal pay bullshite. I don’t doubt that played into the rehiring of Gregg, and it is going to hamstring our men’s team during possibly the last time I’ll get to see our team play a World Cup on home soil.

So that’s not entirely true. She’s definitely been overrated, but at the same time she’s been super valuable on set pieces and PKs.

That's what I am getting from these responses, I wasn't looking for opinions on her off-the-field antics but I really wanted to know how good a player she was for the USWNT.

She used to be really, really good. Now she’s kind of a PK merchant.

I did hear on a podcast one of the US Players say they actually are thankful for Rapinoe being on the squad because it allows all the rest of them to just focus on their game because they know Rapinoe will do all the media stuff.

Hope is arguably the greatest women's GK of all time. Shes definitely in the top tier.

She wouldn't make the all time USWNT by any objective measure. The forwards would be Wambach, A-Mo, Hamm, Lloyd, Milbrett (and that's if you count Lilly and Chastain as other positions).

Current players, Press is clearly better at the same position. Lavelle and Ertz are better in real time and young up and comers like Rodman are more valuable.

Will be interesting if she will continue to stick to her let men compete in female spaces once a man gets into major women’s football

I mean, Rapinoe is 38. It’s not like she’s in her prime.

Well I didn’t say anything about “All time USWNT.” That’s a different standard.

But you bring up some good names. But as far as top players? She has to be top 10, no?

No way.

She's barely even top 5 defenders

Well she wasn’t a defender, so your point is technically correct

Ya, that's on me, I'm not changing it. Not a top 5 winger though.

ETA: I could be wrong though, working on like an hour of sleep because the power went out last night so....
