Provided they don’t get hurt, England has an amazing core going forward. And to think much of it started literally a decade ago with the English FA releasing the ‘Future Game’ technical guide in 2010. An immense amount of progress since then. This old BBC article goes over some of the key advances, including Greg Dyke’s goals for Euro 2020, which was reaching the semi-final. LINK

In my own timeline, all this started because they couldn’t figure out a way of playing as Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard together. When Scholes left, and they still refused to play Carrick, you knew how terrible their international performances were going to be.

Sancho’s lack of meaningful opportunities until today has been mind-boggling for me.

The FA and the youth academies at the bigger clubs got on the same page in terms of development

A huge emphasis was put on technical ability

It was a decade after most of the continent to be fair. And you saw flashes of it before. Just sucks for those kids educated in the noughties.

Back then they used to say the weakness was left midfield. You had some older dudes like Trevor Sinclair, Jason Wilcox (TYFYS), Steve McManaman, Steve Guppy (TYFYS)…I remember a lot of calls for a young Gareth Barry to play there. Sven ended up usually playing Joe Cole or Kieron Dyer there.

Lest we forget Ray Parlour, trapped in Beckham’s shadow. If Lee Bowyer had not beaten the shite out of that student he would’ve been great for those England teams
