Steven has to start being more disciplined. I realize he feels the world on his shoulders and wants to do everything but he just can't. The Lucas substitution showed how different of a team we are when he keeps himself forward. He needs to learn to trust the defense more, even when they aren't doing anything to deserve that trust.

Yeah totally agree. Hopefully now that Lucas is on his way back Gerrard could realize that. At his age he doesn't have the legs he used to but can still be useful in the final 1/3 of the field.

The importance of Lucas being on the pitch can't be effectively stated in words.

It kind of changed when Lucas came on, didn't it? Lucas anchored the back with Jay, freeing Stevie up to go forward. Suddenly we looked formidable in attack.

Yeah we desperately missed him last year...

Oh, and who all shared a gasp when Lucas went down grabbing his leg?

Turns out he just got deadlegged!

It was unbelievable. 65 minutes of nonsense all of a sudden turned into something resembling football.

He is the "destroyer" we need in the squad. He gives the rest of the squad so much confidence. All of a sudden there was space on the wings, Gerrard had room to operate and passes were actually going forward instead of sideways. And don't get me wrong, I understand how imperative lateral passes are in this system. But when you do them to the extent (like Jay Spearing does) that your forwards go dozens of minutes without touching the ball, something is wrong.

Lucas breaks up possession and his defensive positioning alone is enough to give him a starting spot in virtually every squad in England.

For me he is the best true defensive mid in the EPL.

I agree. He has the potential to be world class if he can continue to refine his passing skills before entering his prime. Hopefully he rediscovers the form he had before his injury last season. He was special to watch.

Anyone else feel we're probably another transfer window or two away from fully implementing this system? Not that we won't be good, but just that we may not move up the table much this season?

I'm tempering my expectations for this season - of course, it could all look different with the full squad, but that was fairly close to it yesterday. I dont' want to overreact to one game, but beween it and the friendlies, we seem disjointed, especially on offense.

Its going to take longer to implement and get everyone comfortable than I thought. We'll probably need to bring in a couple more guys that are more natural fits. And we have a fairly difficult first six games.

I think that will always be the case but Brendan will not fully force the system he wants with this group of players. He will let the best players he has dictate the full tactics. But every player he adds is definitely a step toward full implementation of his preferred system.

Overall it wasn't pretty yesterday but I was pleased with some things I saw. As has been said so many times already in this thread Lucas is the key. That will free Gerrard to play forward and support the attackers. Nothing yesterday changed my opinion that Liverpool has an outside shot of competing for fourth. Time will tell though. Days are still young.

5.5M, but apparently we are supplementing his wages. Not sure if that is with a golden handshake to AA or payments to Fiorentina. I've heard it basically equates to letting him go for free, we just wanted out of his wages.

Makes you wonder who would be coaching this team if Kenny listened to what everyone else said last January and bought a quality DM to cover for Lucas.

You know I'm not entirely sure just yet. We showed flashes of brilliance, and had moments of complete stupidity. Gerrard moving up changed everything. Borini's movement yesterday was superb I thought, even though his touch and decision making were off. Carra proved he can still be a good defender and a valuable substitute. Downing finally got some nuts when he cut inside, and it payed off.

Obviously I'm being glass half full here, but a lot of our problems yesterday COULD be attributed to early season rust. We'll have to wait and find out if that's the issue, or its that these players just don't fit the system.

Rumor is we made a new bid for Ramirez today and Joe Allen is very close to being finalized.

Have been hoping all along that the rumors would start anew again. Lets get him this time.

Those would be two good additions, but I'm really hoping for another striker... I guess that would be contingent on moving Andy on...

Some cover for Enrique at LB would be nice, too.
