Can't say I'm surprised really. We reportedly had £30m to spend going into the summer, and we spent just over that.

If we don't have the money then we don't have the money. Simple as that. Walking away is better than over-paying and spending money you don't have. And that applies for guys not named Clint Dempsey as well.
It sucks, but we made this bed last year with ridiculous fees paid for garbage transfers. Now we have to sleep in it. It is what it is.

ETA: Again, we did sign a striker yesterday. It is possible that BR thinks he's enough for now.

You know, I trust BR. If he thinks that the squad he has now is good enough, and is confident in the players he has now, then I have no problem. I love the fact that he won't make any crazy signings and overpay for players. We all knew this was going to be a long rebuilding process.
