I disagree with this. Im not sure how much fan support a new manager would have if a season like this was repeated. No one has any real fears of relegation, but it's the trend to the middle of the table that's got everyone worried. No Liverpool fan wants to be a middle of the table club. With the early departure of Hodgson, the brief period of Dalglish, and with a new guy coming in, I think this is absolutely a make or break year for FSG. A lesser extent than relegation worries, but a make or break year nonetheless.

I think its make or break in the sense of getting back to the CL quickly (spending $ this summer) or resigning our selves to the idea that we are going to lose some top players and grow through youth... and that it will probably be a few years.

I believe that FSG are committed to winning and building something... If Martinez is the hire, I will take a second and then get behind him 100%. He has done some nice things in his career and proven himself to have a tactical acumen in the BPL... It will be nice to have someone young with fresh perspectives...

Twitter is abuzz about Louis van Gaal agreeing to become the new Director of Football today. This is a bit strange if true, considering that LvG is a bit of a loose cannon who may very well jump ship in 2 or 3 years. If this is about building something for the future ... wouldn't we want something a bit more stable?

Everyone needs to quit acting like fan boy idiots if Martinez gets hired. Simply put, no one knows anything. Everyone can guess, but nobody is ever held accountable.

lol. You could make this argument about any hire. I never said I knew anything. I just said I wasn't excited about it. I think we're all allowed to get excited on our own about a hire or not.

Also, no one is claiming we're going to jump ship and be "fan boy idiots" if he gets hired. There are MAYBE two Liverpool posters on here that are fair weather fans. I stuck by Kenny through the entire thing, as well as Andy, and that shite smear Downing, so I'd like to think I pass the "fan boy idiot" test.

quote:

I will trust that he's brought in for legitimate reasons and be excited about it. A good young mind and someone who is sharp tactically isn't the worst thing in the world. Nobody on the outside (and certainly not us) knows what the new management structure will look like so even guessing at all this is pretty silly.

I totally agree. Although I think he's not the best hire I understand that there are people in better positions to make that decision. I will be behind him 110%, because that is the Liverpool way, regardless of the ups and downs. But, there are people in better positions at clubs everywhere that make astonishing managing decisions every year (Aston Villa, Wolves, QPR). It's just natural to question it when you don't understand it.

The overwhelming vast majority of fans, pundits, and commentators would disagree with you on that. Almost everyone sees this year as setting us back significantly (meaning "break" not as in relegation, just mediocrity for years to come), if we don't get it right. You're a smart guy who knows his stuff about the club, so don't take this as me telling you you're wrong. Far from it, as I trust your opinion on these kind of things a lot. I say it as more of a vindication of the way I feel.

I may not be excited about it now, but I have no doubt that I will be after reading up on his tactics and whatnot. A good writeup and I would be excited about any manager. Honestly I'm just happy that the search is coming to a close. If it is Martinez, so be it. He'll be a great manager, because we're Liverpool, and winning is what we do.

Here you go, from Zonal Marking. It does make you excited about a guy who seems to know tactics and not afraid to make changes...

Roberto Martinez - Zonal Marking

Again, I think its human nature to want a sexy name as a manager, when your club the size of LFC... That said, I thought the same thing about LSU football when we got Miles (had never heard of him before) and that hasnt turned out too bad...

I've been out of pocket for the past five or six days and apologize if this has been posted already.

I found it interesting given what appears to be the impending Martinez announcement.

I meant the 'fan boy idiot' in the sense that people get hard ons for a certain few, and disregard anything/anyone else. No one here seemed excited about a potential Martinez hire, which of course everyone is entitled to, but they seemed to be doing so without any real reason for it other than a lack of familiarity with him.

I totally get this. I get very wary of hires that are made quickly because that usually means the candidate was admired from a distance and a proper research and vetting process was cast aside. When the process is slower like this with multiple meetings, I tend to lose my cynicism. The hire might turn out to be a terrible failure, but I will always give the benefit of the doubt when it seems as if a plan is being put in place and adhered to.

the vast majority of fans, pundits, and commentators either naturally, or are paid to have 'the sky is falling' disposition. It's ridiculous and you don't have to go very far to realize it.

Newcastle was relegated a few years back and that was it. Club's dead. They'll never get back to being a feared club. Two years later they made a few shrewd signings and almost made the CL.

Chelsea was out of the top 4 this year, old guys weren't playing well, and they were about to be dumped unceremoniously out of the CL. Now they're CL champions and everything seems right with their world again.

My point is, things change quickly. I don't want to watch Liverpool flounder and shite the bed again next year. It's awful. But if it happens, I'll still know that with a brand like Liverpool's, they'll only be a few smart signings away from being back to progress. It's an important season for sure, but I wouldn't label it make or break.

I think they're holding out hope it will be Rodgers ... Martinez is very clearly the fallback option here.

What makes you think Rodgers is more sought after than Martinez?

I would think Martinez is more highly regarded across football.

I think if they want Martinez, they can have him by tomorrow if they wanted. I think they're buying time to interview Rodgers.

After all this I will be very surprised if its Rodgers. I guess I don't really have a preference. I don't know which of the two is supposed to be better and the most desirable.

Sponsor's have power. They want their logo front and center in the biggest press conference of the week.

2 very good young managers.

Liverpool can't get Klopp so they try to find the next Klopp.

Hoping that Villa hire whichever one loses out..
