quote:

LEICESTER, England (Reuters) - Leicester City soccer club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, a Thai tycoon, was among five people who were in a helicopter which crashed in a ball of flames after a Premier League match on Saturday, a source close to the club said. Also on board were one of Vichai’s two daughters, two pilots and a fifth person whose identity was not immediately known, the source said on Sunday..

Very very sad story but the confusing part to me. How do they not know yet?

quote:

There were no confirmed details on whether anyone on board survived, the source said.

Speculation is that his death could tank the Thai economy so they're being careful with the news.

Scary how the British Government and Police keep info quiet from their people. And can gag the News outlets.

If in USA, we would of known who lived or died, by 8:45pm(crash was 8:30pm locally)

Just think if Southgate had left the match on the copter. He flew on it to the game.

I wonder what actually went wrong with the helicopter.

Because I know that helicopter's have a safety mechanism to land safely even when they lose all power.

Not exactly. It's called an autorotation maneuver and it's a way to safely land a helicopter that experiences engine failure, but it's 100% on the pilot to execute it, not the helicopter itself

Plus, it sounds like the copter did not have a lot of altitude before it went down, which is kinda necessary to autorotate.

From eyewitnesses:

quote:

The engine stopped and I turned round and it made a bit of a whirring noise, like a grinding noise.

“The helicopter just went silent, I turned round and it was just spinning, out of control. And then there was a big bang and then [a] big fireball.”

That's awful for his family and the club...one of the most loved EPL owners

There is also a chart called height velocity curve or as its known as dead man's curve. Basically an area in the aircraft's performance envelope that altitude and airspeed work against a pilot who is executing an autorotation.

The aircraft was fairly new, twin engine Augusta Westland aw169. From what im reading from eyewitnesses it sounds like the aircraft had some kind of tail rotor malfunction which started the aircraft spinning on the way down. One way to counteract this is to reduce or cut power to the engines.

Autorotation with tail rotor problem is no bueno. You need forward airspeed to keep the fuselage straight, otherwise the torque from the main rotor drive makes the fuselage spin opposite the direction of rotation of the main rotor. Confined space take off at night could have hit the tail rotor on a light tower or some wires, it was a car park not a heliport.

I'll take it that you're a reliable source on the matter.

Thanks for the write up.

You need to patent whatever device you have, because that is FM technology.

I was thinking of auto-rotation, which as stated earlier, isnt exactly perfect.

I'm a helicopter mechanic who's been involved in one real life engine failure autorotation landing and been on board many times for practice autos. For tail rotor failure autos they usually do a run on landing which needs forward airspeed and some height to play with. LCFC's aircraft didnt have enough of either.

So sad, they didn’t stand a chance
Can’t imagine the terror they felt in the cabin spinning out of control
