Yup.
Never have been a huge fan of Landon...but what he's done for the game here has been incredible. I just would've never imagined he'd go out this way.

It's not looking good, but Landy has the emotions and mood swings of a 13 year old girl just hitting puberty. I could see him acting the exact opposite of how he feels now in a year when he comes back from his "break".

Sigh. I'm just going to say it:
Most people on this board have been assholes about the Landon situation.
Donovan has been the star of American soccer since the age of 20. 10 years now he has been expected to take the dreams of US soccer on his back with no one else (until Dempsey's recent great run of form) to back him up. His body is taking a toll. He's tired. Can you blame him? Who amongst us can say that we understand his position? No one.
Donovan is frank. He tells it like it is and you guys act like this is some sort of fault. Fans accuse him of acting a bit off and when he comes out and explains why he feels off, people jump his arse. Back off. Donovan has done more than enough for the US program to merit respect from US fans, respect that I feel many here aren't giving him.
When has Donovan not given it all for the US? Meaningless friendlies? Look at the 2002 WC, the 2010 WC, Confed Cup, 2007 GC, and essentially every competition the US has played in and who have we relied upon to make the big plays? That's right. Landon Donovan. I'm no pro soccer player, but between starting every game for the past 12 years and having to do international duty, travel, and play one of the most taxing positions on the field, I think the man has a right to say, "yeah, I'm exhausted."
Seriously, give him a break. There is a reason "sports psychologists" exist. The pressures put on professional athletes is immense, and no one, I repeat NO ONE in the history of the US program has faced nearly as much pressure from fans as Donovan. He was America's first real soccer star and a necessary addition to what was often a struggling league in MLS that needed a marquee American star. He filled this role when no one else could. We should thank him for it.
Could he have been better if he had pushed himself to succeed in Europe? Maybe. There's no guarantee of that, though. But he's an adult and he can make his own decisions, and if we don't like them, well that's just tough, isn't it?
It's ballsy as hell for Donovan to come out with his personal struggles, and frankly, the response from some "fans" is disgusting.
So what if Landon quits? The US moves on. His career can't last forever. Is he an asset to the team? Absolutely, and the US plays better when (a healthy) Landon is on the field. I want him to suit up for us in 2014. I only wish him the best from now until then, and I hope he finds whatever inspiration is necessary to rejuvenate him and get his mind right for the big dance in Brazil. Until then I will continue to support him, as he has more than earned my respect with what he has given us throughout the years.

fricking wonderfully put. the only disagreement i have is that i still think there is no doubt that he will be there in 2014. he just will. he hasn't had enough. he has done all he could, but he will be there. he is too good, still!

I think the disconnect is when some people see a lot of professional athletes that just won't quit, ever.
They practically have to be forced off the field (favre, half the yankees, lewis etc) So when they see Landon actually being honest about it they compare him to these others and say.. Where's your drive? etc.

I mean come on Landon. If he retires, I and i assume most soccer fans will let him go into a sunset of nostalgia and appreciation. All this is just adding to his problems so i can hardly feel sorry for him or any sympathy. Hes playing professional soccer. All occupations have stress and pressure.

I don't think Landon seeks these interviews, but people want to know and I'm sure ESPN/Fox/whoever comes to him and says, "let us interview you about your recent comments." I respect the guy for being honest. Sure, call it attention seeking if you like, but I don't think it is. But again, I think the guy has earned the right to say what's on his mind.

How can you request a Brett Favre and then in the next breadth say you are tired of hearing from a guy? If there ever was a guy I wanted to go away because I was sick of hearing about/from him it was Favre.
And Landon is not seeking out these interviews, reporters are coming to him with these questions and he's answering them. Let's not forget he basically played through a portion of his offseason last year as well after his short loan to Everton. He's tired. Let him rest and get healthy and then let's see where his head is.
