Official statement by La Liga. They side with Barcelona in Leo Messi contract battle: “Current deal is still valid and paying release clause for €700m is the only way out”.

Manchester City are still waiting for Barça decision. #MCFC

Messi also after La Liga statement is not going to chance his mind. He wants to leave and to start a new chapter. Barcelona told him again they won’t let Leo go for free to Manchester City - and La Liga position is part of their strategy. The saga is on.#Messi #FCB #MCFC

They’re going to encourage him to just walk away. I kinda hope he does.

Barcelona is in a no win situation but they're choosing a bigger loss. They're going to get into a legal battle with the best player to ever play for their club and alienate him. He's worth way more as a future ambassador than what they're doing to him now.

It's beyond embarrassing and a terrible look for the club. He's given them everything, the club hasn't done anything to help him win, and he wants to go abroad. Just let him leave.

Did the same saber-rattling with Neymar. Ultimately, FIFA will have the final say and apparently the precedent is there in favor of Messi. Spirit of the contract is "at conclusion of the season". Normally, that's the June dates Barca keep referencing. COVID claims another victim.

ETA: I'm not sure I really want Messi on City right now, but at this point I just want to sign him and this shite somehow end up in CAS. I need more Khaldoon and lawyer squad gifs.

No surprise here, really. The league has lost massive stars recently. They’re going to do what they can to keep maybe the biggest of them all.

Yes poor Messi, never had any help at Barcelona.

Agreed. Also, it's dumb fighting so hard to keep a player that isn't interested in you anymore.

Buying star players doesn't equate to winning everything. Their team has been horribly constructed around him for 4 or 5 seasons now.

If they wanted to get something in return, I feel like they could've just shown a willingness to take like 100 million from City. City would've probably paid it, and 50 million in the COVID market could've been reinvested to get them two quality players.

La Liga put their finger in the air and decided which way the wind was blowing. They extended a deadline so Barca could sign Braithwaite. Another do as we say not as we do benefiting Barca.

Not to mention the financial relief they'd see from having Messi off the wage bill. His salary has got to be insane. There's reports of it being in the 100mm range

I'd be curious to know how much of that has been by his request... No doubt Barca has been horribly run, though... reckless spending..

They should probably accept a fee for him and let him go this season.. They need to start rebuild it..

Good thing they already started by *checks notes* swapping Arthur for an aging Pjanic.

Yeah, I would assume it starts with the people in charge...

Messi probably curious to see how this goes

Pretty sure Barca already told Vidal he would not be needed for the upcoming season.

Methinks little Leo growing up surrounded by senior La Masía studs, and be babied and coddled, has much to do with this situation.

I'm sure he had an important say in posterior signings, so, he's not really a scot free person auto ejecting himself from an at length forlorn situation.
