I'm sure the money is astronomical, but I'd never want to leave a cush national team job for a daily grind in a frying pan like Barca.

People in coaching are wired different I guess.

I think his thought process is that he can always get a national team job again, while this may be his last chance to manage Barca.

Yep, and worst case scenario his buyout at Barca will be massive so if he flames out and gets fired he has f-you retirement money

They did a spot about this on espnfc and seemed to indicate he’d still manage the Dutch side also. Works ok on fifa so....

I heard xavi’s name bandied about also.

Lampard, Pirlo, and Xavi in for the managerial big leagues. What a midfield that would’ve been.

He got more backing at Everton than basically any Everton manager ever, and he failed spectacularly. Can't see this going well.

I’ll always loathe him for what he did to my club. We’re still not recovered from the moves he made.
Barca has $$$$ though, and a solid core/youth academy. Not the same situation as Everton.

they don't

that's why they acquired pjanic and gave away one of their few young talents to get a much older player

I would be shocked if Xavi wants anything to do with the current Barça board. They have no clear plan, bad youth systems, no identity whatsoever. They need a pretty severe rebuild.

The Arthur deal doesn’t make any sense to me. They got a fairly limited amount of money in return for giving up one of their most talented young players.

Barca is going to be in a rough spot for a while.

They have been striking out on lots of their transfers and they’re only signing big names and still doing poorly by reasonable standards.

Pique is 33, Rakitic is 32, Busquets is 32, Suarez is 33, Messi is 33 (although as great as always), and Vidal is 33. Besides Messi all of those guys are slowing down and Suarez and Vidal in particular are getting dangerously close to being washed up.

And the attacking players all get much worse the minute they put on a Barca uniform.

it was an accounting move

Barca's board can, allegedly, become personally liable for a certain threshold of losses. this move put them in the black enough to avoid this

i heard this on a podcast but ESPN has an article on it

quote:

Never mind the players for a moment -- this is a deal that brings Juventus and Barcelona closer to be being able to post a profit before the end of the financial year, which is at the end of this month. The incoming "money" -- and it's worth repeating that the only cash on the move is €12m -- is immediate income in full. The outgoing cost is spread across the duration of their contracts through amortisation. Hey, presto, close to a €50m profit. Which is handy when it comes to FFP. The accountancy is more creative than the midfielders are.

For Barcelona, that is particularly important. More to the point, for Barcelona's board it is. Sam Marsden and Moi Llorens have explained on these pages how Barcelona already needed to raise €124m in sales this season, which put them in the position of needing to find around €60m before July 1. And that was before the effects of the pandemic were calculated. If they didn't, the board of directors would find themselves personally liable for 15% of the loss, as per the 1990 law that governed club structures. That is why Barcelona were so desperate to get a deal done, why a seemingly strange swap deal happened.

He doesn’t seem like a good manager.

Basically wants to sign Donny van de Beek in another Ajax flop.

Rumors are that Messi wants out. He is a prisoner to his own gilded cell so I find it unlikely he moves.

Outside of like 2 clubs he’d have to take a huge paycut to go anywhere.
