He runs considerably farther than anyone else on the squad every game. Technically brilliant on the ball. He wins balls all over the pitch, mostly in dangerous situations. He makes more tackles and completes more passes than anybody else. Most assists in Europe last year. He’s pretty much the engine that runs the team.
you just used the blue print that Henderson fan boys use, minus the technically brilliant on the ball part.

I like Milner and he's done far better in the central role than I ever thought he would... but to me, he doesn't really do anything exceptionally well... he has great work rate and he seems to read and understand the game... which I guess is why he can be influential in matches...
IMO he's not technically great on the ball, he isn't really creative and cant beat a man.. He doesn't have a final ball that can break the lines.. a lot of his tackles are borderline fouls.. he does have a good cross on him... but, usually, at the end of the game he manages to contribute something
edit: he's a very good penalty taker

And there is a lot to be said about having reliable midfield players who are always available for the ball. It is what makes possession teams work. Miler is an important cog than that.
But it's hard for me to buy arguments that Milner is more valuable than Messi, as Messi's end product hasn't changed despite the fact he's getting around 80% less touches around the box (in comparison to Ronaldo last season) and is way farther from goal. Barca are a terrible team without Messi.
