he should have been more clear on his interpretation of sports passion

But that passion isn't directed towards soccer,

each year gets a bigger piece of the pie

the sport being discussed in this thread, and isn't even close to comparable to how it is elsewhere

if it keeps growing, it will get there in time. since it's growing every year, and given our advantages, it will get here quicker than you realize...esp since you used "never" as your time frame

You are wildly, wildly, wildly missing SFP's point. The passion for soccer will grow because it's a sport in America. You must underestimate how popular it already is with young kids compared to some of the other big sports.

It just takes time, and, thankfully you've given us a deadline of "forever."

what i can't wait for is analytics and advanced statistical models to take over in soccer

we will surely be the first nation to go "all in" on this. europe is very much stuck in the mud and conservative in its development

The strides that are already being made there in MLS and just with American fans/writers are impressive. It could be Moneyballed with the added bonus of having a ton of money.

I'm sure this is going to get a quick rebuttal.

in terms of history, belgium and holland are outliers. belgium hasn't done shite nationally, either. they just have a golden generation that is near/at its peak right now. lots of bias. on the flip side, holland is in shambles right now and doesn't consistently put out teams like the bigger euroeapn nations

Belgium's academies are arguably the gold standard in Europe, this golden generation or the huge amount of talent they're producing isn't some sort of fluke. Holland are obv. the same in this regard. Serbia and Croatia are two more 'outliers' who consistently produce talent that isn't respective to their populations or domestic leagues.

quote:

again. it's not like this is some secret, magic formula. or that our own developmental systems won't emerge (with our money and industrious nature, i'm actually banking on this. we lead the world in ideas by a great margin. i can't imagine that won't apply to soccer)

If it were so easy, then how have England fallen so far behind their Spanish, French, Belgian, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, etc. counterparts in regards to youth development? How is it that the Dutch clubs consistently export top tier talent post-Bosman rule? Or clubs like Partizan who consistently export talents to Western Europe despite running off of a very small budget?

Second part of that comment is just

Argentina haven't won a major international tournament since 93', while Uruguay have won two Copa Americas, definitely

Wow, the reaction was even better than I expected. It's similar to the one I had when you asked if the 1994 pool (which only had seven pros on the 23-man World Cup team) had really gotten that much better between then and now.

That deserves all the that this board can handle.

from a historical context, it certainly is a fluke

or am i missing this long history of euro titles and world cup runs by the waffle makers?

they've been well behind the continent for decades

and england just kind of acts british and anti-Europe and lots the athletic, longball/hoof game. they have no excuses b/c they've been a part of major soccer for 50+ years (unlike the US who really has only emerged in the last 20)

all your criticisms should be aimed at England

the US is like...Slovenia, and even they had USSR-based soccer programs developing the culture/players

we're a baby

yeah that 94 team had one guy who played in europe, right? (lalas)

our current team could have a bunch of guys playing in europe who are in the MLS. the MLS just pays them more, so they play in the MLS

that's a problem but there isn't really a good solution to it. we can't tell the guys to take less money to stay abroad, and we can't stop the MLS from spending money to keep popularity high

again...just growing pains

Wiki lists seven who had club ties heading into the tournament and weren't fully contracted in the buildup to the USSF.

Literally, word-for-word, describes the U.S. style of play.

and we've been, essentially, playing soccer for 20 years while england has for 50+

now you're just being obtuse and ignoring reality

at first he did invigorate our side and we did play a prettier band of soccer, but his failures at team building, tactics, positional grouping, in-game management, and basically failing in all areas of managing the game itself have had the team fall off a cliff

he's lost the team, has shown he has no idea what he's doing, and has lacked any sort of innovation going on 3+ years

you lost me there. i've seen zero difference in our style of play since he's been here and it's not b/c our players our incapable as many of them play or have played on sides that much better.

it's nice that jurgen "talks" about all the nice things he wants us to do but he can't implement them. keep in mind this is not the first coaching job he's had that people were not impressed with.
