It looks like there are going to be some big changes when Fox takes over the World Cup in 2018, and one of those may involve the amount of attention paid to Mexico. Anthony Crupi of Advertising Age has an interesting piece on the larger and larger role Fox’s sports programming is playing in its pitches to advertisers in general, but the discussion of the 2018 World Cup and how the network plans to approach it is perhaps particularly notable. One major change? From what Fox Sports president Eric Shanks told Crupi, it sounds like the network will be heavily targeting not just fans of the U.S. national team, but also fans of the Mexican national team.

Shanks says his team learned a great deal during its stewardship of the 2015 Women’s World Cup, and will apply those lessons to next year’s tourney. “We know how to activate this country, and who to target, in order to get the most anticipation and viewership for the World Cup,” Shanks says, adding that in a bid to siphon off English-speaking Hispanic viewers from Telemundo, Fox will cover the Mexican national squad “as if it’s a second home team.”

That'll ruffle some feathers #onhere, but it makes a ton of TV sense. Just look at the ratings in the U.S. for Liga MX.

Disgusting, but it's Fox so unsurprising. They will botch this to the fullest just like they do everything else sport related.

It used to really piss me off seeing people live off the bounty of this country and not root for the USMNT, eschewing them instead for the team repping their country of birth or ancestral origin.

At the end of the day though, there's nothing more American than freedom of choice.

As far as Fox goes, it's just business. There's a huge chunk of change selling advertising to a certain demographic that is likely to support El Tri.

Rock on, Tri huggers.

I can understand not cheering for a national team you didn't grow up having a connection to... or if you were born in the U.S. to Mexican parents and all you watched was El Tri. It's not easy to make that switch.

That nike or coke ad about the mexican kid who watched el tri with his dad then stepped out and wore a US kit with his friends kinda hit me in the feels.

No problem with this... ESPN did the same thing in 2010 and 2014.

There are a lot of other things I'm worried with Fox and the World Cup, although I am coming around on the John Strong/StuBear booth for US matches.

Yeah if I moved to Canada or Panama, no way I'm becoming a fan of their national team. If someone said "root for the country you live in" I'd tell them to frick off.

It was easy to hop across the border, probably illegally, and drain the American system but yea definitely too hard to show a little bit of appreciation for the safe harbor and second chance.

I don't condone Mexico's players' or fans' actions but, I do think having a heated rivalry increases my enjoyment of US soccer. Wins at Azteca mean more to me than elsewhere. Every batman needs his joker. Imagine the rating and publicity if US and Mexico somehow ending up playing a knockout match in the WC. The rivalry helps grow the sport.
