I think I'm happier we're playing Belgium than Algeria

1. we get an extra day of rest, which we desperately need after our group situation

2. Algeria is the exact type of team that fricks with us. they're big, strong, athletic, and direct on the counter, using speed to split CBs. with how our back line has been so shaky, i could see us giving up an early goal and then we'd be up shite creek

3. Belgium has injury worries on the backline and no outside backs, which should open up our best player (fabian) so far in this tournament. they have been inconsistent offensively and are a mess at striker so far, which is hurting their attacking mids. that plays into our defense (which is much more affected by creative strikers making horizontal and diagnoal runs behind our non-communicating CBs and cross/heads)

4. our team plays stronger as an underdog in big tournaments

If Fabian pushes forward too often Hazard will rape us on our right side.

I don't know if I agree but I have no idea why teams don't realize that you need fullbacks.

well if germany and belgium keep winning, perhaps they'll start a new trend

i was shocked when that german got hurt yesterday and lahm actually lowered himself to playing RB

Germany looks like shite across the back. They were so much better when Lahm moved to RB. It was like a big ole gorilla cock slapping Jogi Löw in the face. I wonder if he even noticed or if he'll go back to being a fricktard.

we actually had success defensively with fabian pushing up against portugal and a superior LW, so we can do it

that's one reason i like the cameron/fabian pairing on the right side of our back line, b/c cameron can play pseudo-RB for attacking LMs

i agree with you and mr. ballack

you have like 75 guys who can play holding/defensive mid at a WORLD class level

you have 0 guys who can play RB at a decent level when lahm plays CDM, and you have possibly the best RB in the world when he plays RB

i'm not trying to go all FIFA 14 on Germany, but...seriously?

Jermaine Jones has been our best player, but other than that I guess I agree with your points.

Lowe isn't as great of a tactician as we thought. I remember a bunch of people saying that Klinsmann's success with the German national team was due to Lowe's tactical know-how, but now I'm not so sure.

ETA: Apparently the Belgians think they've already got this in the bag. I think we show them otherwise.

I think Low had a lot to do tactically with those teams, his problem is that he hasn't been able to adapt and evolve his tactics. He's pretty limited.

No German coach has gone 3 major tournaments without winning and kept his job. Low already has, and is signed through Euro 2016. I honestly have no idea why he has such security.

A Boateng and Hummels center back pairing is a recipe for something hilarious to happen.

I read an interesting idea in the ShinGuardian's preview on one way to try and contain Hazard on the flanks. They suggested throwing Yedlin out on the same side as Fab, basically taking Bedoya's spot, and using both their aggressiveness out wide to force Hazard to track back and help poor Vertonghen.

I still don't think I agree with it as we'd basically be rolling the dice on Hazard not slipping through but it's an interesting thought and Klinnsman has already shown he'll pull surprises.

Hazard is going to switch up the middle if we do something like that.

I agree, would that not favor us though just from the standpoint of him having to play more directly at Beckerman, Cameron, Besler versus isolating out wide and cutting in against Beasley?

I'd also think that would really start to play Lukaku out of things and he'd be even less effective than he's already been this tournament.

Thoughts?

I agree with OP. Algeria would have been a tough matchup for us.

Belgium is too, but with this group of players, I would rather be the underdog.

If Hazard does Hazard things, Belgium will score. If Lukaku hits an amazing strike, they will score.

I'm not sweating Belgium scoring. I just want to see us go out there and express ourselves and put a footprint on the game. If we lose, we lose, but let's not do it by being scared of Eden Hazard.
Send Johnson and Beasley up the flanks, get Bradley charging into the box looking for a loose ball. Let's win this thing.
