I don't understand why soccer teams don't do this

I have never understood why teams don't recruit guys who played very high level basketball in college. Maybe not SEC Big Ten level as they go to the NBA but one half notch below. Guys who are just a tiny bit too short and perhaps a half a second too slow to make it to the NBA. Or maybe the soccer teams could offer more money to some tall G-League players.

Get the basketball centers, minimum height of seven feet four inches or something like that and put them on the pitch. Teach them some of the basic soccer things and don't pass the ball to them often (if at all) but every time you have a cross in the box or especially a corner kick, have the seven foot guy right in the middle of it, kick the ball high in the air to him and have him konk it in the goal with his noggin' since he will be a men among six foot boys out there. Probably good for a goal a game.

And NHL teams should all have sumo wrestlers at goalie.

Put them on the pitch where?

I know it's hard to believe, but professional soccer players are able to cross balls over, under, and around your 7ft statue that can't run.

Who says he can't run? And I bet some dude who is seven foot plus and plays big time bball was on his high school soccer team. Find him. Put him at midfield so he has backup when on defense. Or forward but make it clear to his teammates that this is not the guy that will be brining the ball up, a midfielder will take his place for that.

I dunno, I think it's worth a try. Sort of like when Bill Veek as owner of the Chicago White Sox sent out midgets to pinch hit and they always walked because no pitcher could hit the two inch strike zone.

So, you want an entire team of Dan Burns? Yeah, that'd play out nicely.

How many human beings do you think on the planet are 7’4, much less in an appropriate age range, and then see how many are american

Google says
There are an estimated 2,800 to 4,000 people in the world who are 7 feet tall or taller. This extreme height represents a statistical anomaly of roughly 1 in every 1 million to 3 million people worldwide. For a more granular breakdown of this ultra-rare demographic:In the U.S.: There are an estimated 85 to 150 Americans who stand 7 feet or taller

We could have like 4-5 entire teams of 7’ people. I’m in.

Tim Howard was a basketball player. They would only be good at keeper.

You have to start with the ball skills at a young age. Not at 18. That will never work.

I can't just start playing basketball at 18 and hope I will make the NBA.

I thin ktaking some 6'6 athletic freak that lacks the basketball skills should be grabbed when he is in HS and trained to be a goalie.

My issue is that you want to play 10 on 11 for the majority of the game to gain an advantage on maybe 5 set pieces?

Have you ever tried to head a ball in goal while moving and being pushed out of the way? It's not as easy as you make it sound. Not to mention trying to teach that skill to a 21-year old who's never touched a soccer ball before.

You could spend 12 hours a day teaching them and it still wouldn't be successful. It's experience, instinct, and spatial awareness that's built up while a kid is still growing.
