I’m a soccer noob but I feel like this is just a way to have commercial breaks in the middle of a game. Halftime is a pretty good chance for a hydration break. Is this a new thing?

It is. Unless you want to believe players all of a sudden can’t handle heat like they have in the previous 50 years.

It’s like the soccer stars of today continue to search for more ways to pussify the sport

Its like American's continue to search for more ways to claim soccer is a pussified sport.

Seriously, its a fricking water break. Who cares? 75% of an NFL game is commercials and standing around, does that make that sport "pussified"?

It's not the 1970s any more. "Water is for the weak" was thrown out long ago. If taking 2 minutes to get some water helps prevent heat related injuries, then it's good for the sport.

Literally every other sport on Earth has more down time for rest and water and soccer is the sport that is considered weak for instituting a single water break and only when its above a certain temperature

Give me a fricking break.

Our understanding of heat illness has increased significantly since that time. They are required by FIFA if the wet bulb globe temperature is above a certain number. Well hydrated athletes can play harder anyway so I’m not sure why people are complaining.

And football played 50 years without helmets. That doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.

I’m pretty much a purist when it comes to sports… everything was perfect in 2006 and I hate most of what’s gone on since then

Lol. This is just a genuinely amazing sentence. You're purity in this particular sport doesn't extend to the numerous other changes which have had a massive effect on the way the game is played, but yes, a hydration break in the year of our lord 2021 is an affront to the purity offered in 2006.
