Well, fan and follower can be two very different things or there can be a lot of overlap.
I am a rabid, die-hard fan of the USMNT (went to the Gold Cup final, France and Italy friendlies, check up on news on the team religiously, have an unhealthy obsession with Michael Bradley, etc.)
I am a big fan of Arsenal (I watch every game if I can, know the team, have visited the stadium, etc.)
I am a decent fan of l'OM (I lived in the city this year, went to their CL games, have an OM scarf/jersey/whatever, watched a few games on TV, etc.)
I am a more casual fan of every team that has an American on it in Europe. I mostly follow the EPL. I root for Fulham because of Clint, Bolton because of Stubear and Ream, and Everton because of Timmay. When these teams play each other I get confused. I of course root for AZ Alkmaar, Schalke, Chievo, Hoffenheim, etc. I look up their highlights on the reg and often pay attention to how they are doing in the table.
Some people would say this makes me a fan of these teams for the wrong reason. To that I say

In the MLS I support the Galaxy and the Dynamo (except when they play the Galaxy). I'm not going to lie, me liking the Galaxy has a lot to do with Landon Donovan. On the other hand I've been to several Dynamo games and really enjoyed the experience, so I find myself rooting for them on a more emotional level.
ETA: Barça because I like their mentality (and some parallels to be drawn to Arsenal) as well as the French national team. I can't wait for Euros to start. It's gonna be nuts here.

Leeds United...all other English and Sheepshagger clubs are shite. Leeds is the only club that I would wake up at an ungodly hour to watch or travel across the Atlantic to see. MOT

I always try to follow a newcomer in the EPL each year and this year it was Norwich but I didn't catch many games on TV. I will stick with them next year.

Only teams i actively root and pull for are Chelsea and USA. Been to a US game and my family visited the Bridge and got me some cool shite there (my little sister gets all the cool trips).
Loved watching Blackpool play a couple seasons ago, wish they'd make it back. After playing Napoli I would watch them if they happened to be on tv when I had some free time. Like everyone else said I'll watch teams that have Americans on them and in Euros I'll watch teams with Chelsea players.
Also like watching the Dutch just because I use them on FIFA, no other reason.

Just curious -not trying to derail thread, but how did you guys decide which teams to follow/become fans of and why are there so many Liverpool fans on this board?

I support Arsenal and USA. My second team is AC Milan, although my allegiance has waned since they got rid of Shevchenko, Kaka, and Pirlo. My second international team was Germany for a while (because of Klinsmann, actually), but it is now Holland. I originally chose all my teams (other than USA) because I liked one of their star players - Henry for Arsenal, Shevchenko for AC Milan, Klinsmann for Germany, and Van Persie for Holland.
I'm also a casual fan of teams with US players - Everton, Fulham, Bolton, AZ, etc.

I would say I am a FAN of the USMNT, West Ham United, and the Republic of Ireland.
I watch most of Barcelona's matches and normally try to watch Spain play. I really enjoy that style of football.
I usually record all the EPL games that are on FSC and watch a few every weekend. It will be great to have WHUFC back in the EPL where I can watch them every weekend via FSC2GO!
Much to the chagrin of many on here, I do watch the Mexican National team with my wife from time to time although (despite being an LSU fan) I have never lobbed a piss baloon or chanted Osama.

1 should be the only answer. How come soccer is the only sport where it seems to be acceptable to have multiple clubs? How stupid would it be if you said I'm a Chargers, Falcons, Cowboys, and Jets fan?

Man U: FIFA as a kid. Loved Becks, CR7, and Rooney when he came over. My love for the Red Devils has grown ever since.
Seattle: Watched a bunch of MLS last year, decided to adopt them this season. Fredy Montero, largest crowd in league, USOC run, and they haven't done anything in league playoffs ever.
Inter: Few years ago, started watching more Serie A. Didn't like AC at all, my affiliation with Inter developed from that hatred for AC.

A lot of people just somewhat randomly pick their clubs or try to watch a few games and see who they like.
Liverpool are a historically great club with 18 English titles and 5 European titles. They play in the league that is most accessible in the US and they play in a country that speaks English in a top football league.
However, I think this board has more Arsenal than Liverpool fans.

Uh, most people will have one club in a few different countries. Outside of rooting for Americans (Fulham, Everton, etc.), most people will root for one club per country max.
Is it wrong if were a fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Yomouri Giants (Japanese baseball league)?

Have a favorite club in different leagues.
By your logic, no one could be a LSU and a Cowboys fan. I couldn't be a fan of the NFL and the Arena League. Or college football. I could like a major league baseball team, but not any minor league teams.

First of all, nobody outside of Yomouri cares about the Giants who cares.
Second of all, and more seriously, there is no competition these two teams can ever compete it so it's not really a valid comparison. What are you multiple team fanboys going to do when your four "clubs" are in the semifinals of the Champions League?
It's much more authentic and rewarding to have one club to live and die by.
