Going back to roster/player selection because in the end this is always my biggest gripe with him, can someone answer this: we played Yedlin at RB against Belgium and Eden fricking Hazard last summer in the WC and he did a pretty damn good job by all accounts. Why is he now it seems not a consideration at all at RB?

We have a severe personnel problem, and it's undeniable. How many forwards and attacking midfielders do we have with no one who can play the 10? We have forwards like Zardes who aren't exactly FIFPro World XI material playing in the middle of the fricking diamond, and that's 100% on Jurgen. His decision to stick with a young, shaky backline that's been pretty bad over just scrapping the experiment to win is 100% on him. The fact, though, is that every person in US Soccer had a bad tournament. We struggled to really look like we even gave a shite most of the time. Outside of Clint, no one could sniff a goal during this tournament. Overall, we played like shite both tactically and performance-wise.
I probably will get torched for saying this, but we honestly just swapped evils. Bob Bradley was not the super manager recent comments have made him out to be. We just went from a guy who stuggled to make any changes or adjustments whatsoever to a guy who does it without any clear reasoning and seemingly on impulse. Looking back over the long term, we have continued to deliver the same results. Why? That's where US Soccer is right now. Period. We can act like losing to Jamaica was anything more than just a fluke and like we won't dominate CONCACAF AGAIN in qualifying. The fact is that you could get Mou, SAF, and Pep all managing the USMNT, and the results would likely be the same.

He is a phenomenal change of pace guy. He's not a 90 minute guy. He came in fresh against a Hazard who'd played every match of the tournament and the entire match before Yedlin came in. His impact has very little to do with his skills as a defender and everything to do with his retarded speed. It makes sense that they'd want to make him more of an attacking player since his speed won't hold up for 90 minutes, especially as he ages, and his defending is a liability. He's a spark guy, not a long term choice at RB.
Now, he may improve a good bit in Europe, especially with real first team minutes. At the moment, though, he's a project where no is really sure where he'll fall into place.

Even if we miss the CC it is not then end of the world. It will suck but not set USMNT back 20 years.
We qualified in 2009 and made it to the final. What did we get a round of 16 game we lost to Ghana.
Did not qualify in 2013. What did we get a round of 16 game we lost to Belgium.
Two teams that played in the CC in 2013 made it to the QFs in Brazil.

A. More competitive matches against good squads
B. Time to get adjusted to the pitches and locations of the World Cup

He came in around minute 30 and played the rest of the match and did pretty well.

Do we know that yet? You go on to say he's a project which he is so give him a chance. We certainly have trotted out a lot of other youngsters who have seemingly failed time and time again. Is Timmy Chandler a long term choice at RB? I sure fricking hope not. And last summer in a knockout game, we felt it better to bring Yedlin in against one of the best players in the world over Chandler.

Then tell me why we arguably had a better showing in Brazil versus South Africa. In both WC we went 1-1-1 and lost in the round of 16. I would suggest Brazil was a better showing given we advanced from a tougher group over winning the group in 2010.

Well, we have at least one - but he can't/won't get called in.
That's not a personnel issue - that's a management issue.
It's like saying "well, we don't have a good left mid." We do, he's just playing left back.

His biggest strength is his closing speed, but he's not a guy you put out there unless you have your fullbacks overlapping and pushing hard to create chances. It's a major plus when a fullback can push up to the touchline and then close down some of the fastest players in the game on the counter. In a situation where Tim Howard is out of his mind on Cocaine, Adderall, and Freedom and playing a team as dangerous as Belgium's squad was (Lukaku off of the bench? Seriously?), I'd put Yedlin there every time. I'm not taking anything from what he did or what he can do.
I'm just saying that Deandre Yedlin is not as much of a fullback as he is a hyperathletic footballer. If we can use that speed in the attack and make him more flexible in terms of position, he's much more useful to use than hoping he grows out of a lot of the little things that get brought up when discussing his defending. Personally, I'd just like to see him out there because he's an animal. I just don't think we need to put all of our eggs in the Yedlin at RB basket. Timmy "Fußballgott" Chandler isn't really the option either, and I'd rather Yedlin over him. I'm just saying that everyone in charge of determining Yedlin's position is struggling with it.

I don't disagree with anything you said. I think we have a couple of guys who make the grade out there with a lot of gaps to fill around them. Occasionally, we get lucky and guys like Beckerman play beyond themselves to really tie things together, but we're hurting more and more with every established player who is aging. Dempsey was our only threat, and I'd be surprised if he's around for Russia.

I don't think his best position should be that big of a mystery - it's as a RWB or RB. At this point in his career he doesn't have and won't be able to develop the skills necessary to be an elite winger. Positioning can be learned and then he can use his athleticism in attack like you said.
Basically any day of the week and twice on Sunday I would choose to play Yedlin at RB if we are going with Bedoya at RM over Chandler and Evans.

I vote that we play Yedlin where Spurs want to play Yedlin. It can't be helpful to the development of a young player to play different positions for club and country.

Play him where he helps you most. Bayern played Alaba as a left back even though he was Austria's best center mid. They didn't start playing him at left back, they put him where he was needed most for them.
